MEDIA AWAITS RAY AT JFK

Monday 14 January 2002

A plethora of various media representatives were on hand this morning at Kennedy International Airport awaiting the arrival of the controversial 16 year-old Elmer Ray, 33rd seed in the HBF's World Championship tournament.

The plane carrying Ray and the other eleven fighters who took part in the HBF's Japan fight card on Friday set down at 9am, and it was the young Florida native who received the bulk of the media attention.

Ray made his way through the terminal flanked by the same quartet of large men who shadowed him into the ring in Japan, although the lovely ladies and his training team were nowhere to be seen.

A pair of reporters were able to squirm close enough to fire a question at Ray, one of them asking about the appropriateness of his remarks before the fight against Buddy Baer.

"It ain't braggin' if you can back it up, man," was Ray's reply.

HBF personnel quickly directed the fighter and his entourage towards a stretch limousine, which apparently transported them directly to the federation's Pennsylvania Plaza head office for a meeting between Ray and HBF President Michael Vincennes. The details of that meeting could only be speculated upon, and many have wondered how hard the HBF will come down on Ray as a result of his antics in Japan.
