Gans Survives Against Mcauliffe
December 17, 1906
Joe Gans (23-1-2) retained his LBA Lightweight title with a DRAW15 against #9 Jack McAuliffe (21-4-2).
Gans got off to a slow start and appeared to be on his way to losing his title.
After 9 rounds I had it 87-85 in favor of McAuliffe. Then Gans got hot and won the next five rounds. Battling through a left eye that started swelling in the 3rd.
McAullife sensing he was losing came out strong in the 15th, dropping Gans and then pummeling the champ on the ropes until the round ended. Many in the crowd thought the knockdown was enought to unseat the champion. Everyone saw the fight differently.
I had 143-142 Gans. Tom Trunzo ringside had it 143-142 McAuliffe. The official judges had it 144-141 Gans/143-143/ and 145-140 McAuliffe.
Gans just laughed when asked about a rematch after the fight.
