The Colossal 20th Century Tourney(1901-2000)
Thanks to Eck for the idea for this. I have made some of my own tweaks to the format to fit into my ideas.
There have been 1029 teams between the years 1901 and 2000 that have finished with a record of .500 or above. I went through and seeded these teams 1 through 1029 based on winning %. I calculated that there would be thirty-two leagues of 32 teams, with an additional 5 teams left over. To save time I drew 5 of the .500 teams out of a hat to eliminate them and make the leagues even.
After I reached the 1024 team mark overall, I went through the process of seeding them into their proper leagues. #1 overall goes into to group #1, #2 into group #2.........#32 overall into group #32, #33 overall into group #32.......#64 overall back into Group #1.
After I had gone through and placed all 1024 teams into their respective groups, I then went through and placed them into their proper divisions based on their seedings within the group. I decided to go with 2 Leagues of 16, because my plan is to take the take the top 8 from each league into the next round. So the #1 seed goes to the AL and the #2 and #3 go the NL and the #4 and #5 go to the AL and so on.
So as of now I have 32 seeded out leagues waiting to play out a 162 game season to see who moves on the round of 512. Much like March Madness this tourney will have 6 rounds(1024,512,256,128,64,32). I will reseed after each round based on records within the tourney. So after round #1 the team with the best 162 game season will get the #1 seed and after round #2 the team with best 324 game(two round) record will get the #1 seed and so on. I will probably post each group seperately on the board to allow discussion and predictions for that group within a thread and then keep this thread alive for discussions of the overall tourney progress.
I will post the top seeds in this thread in a little bit. I will also post the first group in a seperate group either later today or tomorrow for your perusal. Until then feel free to comment on the premise and ask questions. Please let me know what you think.
