BOWE RETAINS
HOPKINS AND TONEY GO TO WAR

New York, NY. World heavyweight champion, Riddick Bowe, made a succesful first defence in front of his hometown fans, when he knocked out Tim Witherspoon in the second round. Witherspoon started well, outpunching Bowe in the opener and taking the round, but fell apart in the second when the champion started to open up with some heavy artillery. Bowe was landing some punishing shots when Witherspoon went down onto one knee from an overhand right and took the count. Bowe was ecstatic, and seized the opportunity to taunt Tyson, who was watching from ringside.

"I'm the man, I'm the man," Bowe shouted at Tyson. Tyson replied with a hand gesture.

James 'Lights Out' Toney and Bernard 'The Executioner' Hopkins went to war in the chief support, with Toney taking a split decision and the vacant North American middleweight title with scores of 115-113 and 115-114 [Toney] and 116-113 Hopkins. There was bad blood between these two, and that was shown in the intensity at whih they fought each other.

Toney came out strong and took the opener, but Hopkins came back in the following round and dished out some punishment to his rival, and staggering him in the process. The third was close, with Toney just taking it and Hopkins suffering a gash over his left eye. Again the fourth was a close round, with Hopkins bloodying the nose of Toney, however, Toney also just edged this round, and then came out and controlled the fifth. Hopkins cutman managed to close the gash between rounds, and Hopkins came out and won the sixth big, by landing some punishing bodyshots against his opponent. The seventh was busy, with Toney just edging it, and the eighth was dead even. Hopkins edged the ninth, suffering a cut over his left eye in the process, then Toney came out and won the tenth comfortably. Hopkins took the last two rounds, but it wasn't enough, and the decision and belt, and perhaps most importantly, the bragging rights went to James Toney.

Undercard Action.

Gerrie Coetzee stopped Anthony Willis in the last round of a scheduled eight. Coetzee was leading at the time of the stoppage. He put Willis down with an overhand right, Willis beat the count but was put down again but managed to regain his feet. The referee, however, decided that Willis was in no fit state to continue and waved the fight off with two seconds remaining.

Iran 'The Blade' Barkley put on an excellent performance in front of his hometown fans, outpunching Roggerio Cacciatore for eight rounds before finishing him off at the beginning of the ninth round, when Barkley came charging out of his corner, and hammered his opponent to the canvas. Cacciatore had also been down in the fifth and eighth rounds.

Sumbu Kalambay put on another dominant display against an outclassed opponent, beating Leonard Townsend by unanimous decision, with scores of 100-87 twice, and 99-88.

Oliver McCall beat Jody Ballard by unanimous decision over six rounds, 60-53 on all judges cards. McCall dropped Ballard in the third and fourth, and looks useful.
