HOLMES CRUISES IN CALI
Saturday 19 January 2002
SELLAND ARENA, FRESNO, CALIFORNIA
24 year-old Pennsylvanian Larry Holmes, the #4 seed in the Heavyweight Boxing Federation's World Championship tournament won an easy 6 round unanimous decision tonight against James Broad of North Carolina.
Besides a brief period at the end of the 1st round when Broad landed a nice right-left combination, Holmes was in control for the duration of the bout. It was a seemingly effortless performance that captivated the Selland Arena audience, during which Holmes showed the benefit of a training plan that had him looking perhaps fitter than anyone to have contested a HBF bout to this point. At the end of the fight, Holmes appeared as fresh as at the beginning and more than ready to go another six rounds.
The 6'3" Holmes, decked out in trunks of white with thin red trim, weighed in at an impressive-looking 213 pounds. He took the decision by scores of 59-55, 58-56 and 60-54.
"I just couldn't do anything against him," said a frustrated James Broad after the fight. "I had that one chance at the end of the 1st round and then, nothing. Man, he's got a fierce jab. He just had it in my face the whole fight."
The swelling around Broad's right eye was a testament to this. Indeed, it was the Holmes jab that impressed many during the HBF's October auditions.
"That's my bread-and-butter," said a smiling Holmes. "Everything I do comes off of it, without a doubt. I'm really happy that tonight has worked out so well. Those nerves, they really got to me back in the dressing room."
Of all the top seeded contenders in the World Championship tournament, Holmes has been by far the most camera shy.
"Well, what's more important? Winning the championship or getting my face on television?" Holmes replied when asked about his "media evasiveness".
"Larry Holmes wants this championship more than anybody in the tournament," said his trainer Saoul Mamby. "Some will say that's not true, that they are all hungry for it. Well, they're wrong. There are degrees of hunger, see, and no one else has trained as hard as Larry, period."
Yes, without a doubt, Larry Holmes showed tonight why he is regarded as one of the favourites to take out the HBF's inaugural World Championship...
