Arizona Loses Home Opener to Pittsburgh

PHOENIX - Bob Melvin's Diamond Back's career didn't start out the way he wanted it to. "It's no big deal it's only the beginning of the season 0-1 is nothing. It's a disappointment that we had to lose our home opener and send 43,000 fans home unhappy, but those things happen. Life isn't perfect and neither is baseball."
Javier Vazquez pitched seven inning and gave up three runs--one in the second and two in the sixth. Randy Choate came in and got one out. But he gave up three runs. The rest went downhill and the Pirates got the next six outs without any runs given up.
For the Pirates Ty Wigginton was 2-3 with four runs batted in. Jose Castillo was 2-4 with two runs, two runs batted in and a triple. Starting Pitcher Oliver Perez was injured in the first inning so it was a bullpen effort to pull out the win.
Troy Glaus was 2-4 in his first game with a run batted in.
"We'll have our off days and our on days. Unfortunately this one had to be our off day," said Melvin.
