Hitte Takes Crown Late From Whitney

March 3rd, 1907

Charley Hitte (9-5) scored a UD15 over Kyle Whitney (9-1-1) to win the vacant LBA Welterweight Title, vacated by Tommy Ryan's decision to move to middleweight.

Whitney seemed in control early in the fight despite a bad second round that saw a cut under his left eye. Whitney also dropped his hands after the second, evidently feeling that Hitte couldn't hurt him.

Round 6-10 were close with Whitney's left eye starting to swell in the 8th and Hitte's in the 9th.

Hitte then took control of the fight winning 4 of the last 5 rounds as Whitney was too tired.

I had it 144-143 Hitte as did ringside expert Aurelio Barrios. The official judges scored it 143-142/144-143/144-142.

On the undercard
FW - Jem Driscoll (25-5) UD10 Will Curley (8-2) (Despite the blowout loss Curley debuts on the LBA rankings at #3)
HW - Ed Dunkhorst (17-12-2) TKO10 Steve Reynolds (7-2-2)
LW - George McFadden (9-2-1) UD10 Mike Daly (11-14-2)
FW - Jerry Barnett (1-0) SD10 Jack Downey (1-1)
FW - Lew Ryall (1-0) SD10 Young Byrnes (1-1)
