NATIONAL LEAGUE

Sunday, June 1, 1901

In National League play, the first place Pittsburgh Pirates and the second place New York Giants kept pace with one another as they divided their doubleheaders against the Phillies and Reds respectively...The Bucs are still one half game ahead in the race...and the hottest team in baseball, the Boston Braves have now won six straight and have moved to within one game of first place...but they lost pitcher Warren Spahn for seven weeks with a herniated disk.

In Cincinnati, it was a hitter's paradise with 53 hits all total in the two games...Pittsburgh slammed 16 in the first game and was victorious, 11-5...Jason Kendall (.336) had four hits, Honus Wagner (.292) and Roberto Clemente (.299) ripped three hits each and the Pirates hit nine two baggers...Jesse Tannehill (5-4 3.36) was the victor and Bucky Walters (3-6 4.48) absorbed the defeat.

The Redlegs punched out 12 hits as Dave Concepcion (.261) drove in four runs and Frank Robinson (.316) two in the Reds 10-4 romp over the Pirates in game two...Pittsburgh tied an NL record by committing four errors and giving up five unearned runs...Jim Maloney (4-2 3.56) went six for the win with Jose Rijo (0-1 4.05) picking up his fourth save...Pittsburgh's Vic Willis (3-3 3.42) was stuck with the loss, but didn't give up an earned run...Leftfielder Honus Wagner (.296) hurt his back trying to make a shoestring catch and will be out for 1-2 weeks.

At the Polo Grounds, the Giants and the Phils swapped a pair of 2-0 shutouts...reliever Jack Baldschun was needed as a starter by the tired Philadelphia staff and he responded in brilliant fashion with a nine-strikeout three-hit shutout...Christy Mathewson (4-6 3.24) was the tough luck twirler in the opener.

Gaylord Perry (3-4 2.79) hurled a five-hitter to gain the twillbill split, while lefty Steve Carlton (1-8 5.45) fanned nine in six innings and suffered the second game loss.

The redhot Braves won their sixth in a row by taking two from the last place Dodgers...in the opening game of the doubleheader, Wally Berger (.298), Hank Aaron (.285) and Fred McGriff (.219) belted in two runs apiece in a 6-3 triumph...Spahn (5-6 2.80) garnered the win and Burleigh Grimes (1-5 5.48) lost it for Brooklyn.

Game two only had five hits in the game...only two by Boston...but it was enough to win 2-1...Phil Niekro's knuckleball was playing havoc with Dodger hitters as he held them to just three hits, striking out eight and walking six on a windy afternoon at Braves Field...Don Sutton only gave up two hits, but they were back-to-back in the second frame...Javy Lopez singled and Chipper Jones homered.

At Wrigley Field, the Cubbies and the Cardinals each won a game...in the opening game, Moe Brown (6-5 3.15) was particularly outstanding with a fine three-hit 1-0 shutout of St. Louis....He outpitched Mort Cooper (7-4 3.77) for the win...Ernie Banks (.242) singled in Kiki Cuyler, who led off the game with a double...that completed the scoring for that game.

In the second half of the twinbill, it was another well-pitched encounter, the Cards Bob Gibson (5-3 3.35) locked up in a good one with the Cubs Ed Reulbach (3-6 3.86) and bested him 3-2 in 11 innings...Reulbach whiffed eleven Redbirds in the game...Enos Slaughter (.356) tied it up in the ninth with a home run and Tim McCarver (.205) parked one in the tenth to decide it. With the split Chicago moved out of last place into seventh, just ahead of Brooklyn, who lost twice.
