AMERICAN LEAGUE

WASHINGTON SENATORS 8 - NEW YORK YANKEES 5 (10 innings)...The Senators rebounded from a tough loss yesterday with a resounding fifteen hit barrage to beat the Bronx Bombers and sink them to second place behind the Tigers, one game out...Corey Koskie (.327) slammed four hits and drove in two runs, Cecil Travis (.295) had three hits and three rbis and Kirby Puckett (.225) contributed two hits and two runs scored...Washington teed off on loser Sparky Lyle (1-3 3.86) in the three-run tenth to secure the victory...Rick Aguilera (6-0 2.35) made his MLB-leading twenty-fourth appearance and got the win with two innings of relief...although he did give up one unearned run in the ninth...Lou Gehrig (.298) and Joe "Flash" Gordon (.258) both pushed across two runs for New York.

DETROIT TIGERS 7 - ST. LOUIS BROWNS 5...The Tigers are on the prowl and back atop the AL...ineffective relief pitching plagued both Detroit and St. Louis, but the Tigers offense overcame it by lashing out fourteen hits...everyone in the starting lineup collected at least one hit...five of them had two each...Hank Greenberg (.358) added to his MLB-tops rbi total with two more...he now has 53...Jim Bunning (5-3 3.96) went seven and registered the win...he gave up all three runs in the first inning and left with the score 5-3...John Hiller had a very rocky appearance and got his fifth save, despite six hits, two bases on balls and two runs in two innings...Browns' loser Urban Shocker (1-6 7.24) came in with the score tied 3-3 in the eighth, but didn't last an inning...his successor Stu Miller wasn't much better...starter Ned Garver did a creditable job against the best hitting team in baseball...the Tigers lead the majors with a .293 average.

PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS 2 - CHICAGO WHITE SOX 1...the seventh place A's Rube Waddell and the third place Chisox's Ed Cicotte stood toe-to-toe to each other for nine innings and when the smoke cleared, Philadelphia came away the winner in a close one...Waddell (3-6 5.03), a disappointment so far this season, was exceptional, yielding only two singles...he fanned five and walked two...Cicotte (8-4 3.24) failed to get his ninth win...back-to-back ninth inning doubles by Al Simmons (.318) and Jimmie Foxx (.271) did him in.

CLEVELAND INDIANS 2 - BOSTON RED SOX 1 ...In another tight pitchers battle, Earl Averill (.301) crushed a Dick Radatz fastball for a two-run walk-off homer...it was number seven for him...Bob Feller of the sixth place Indians pitched very well the first eight frames and was removed for a pinchhitter...Doug Jones (2-4 2.35) chunked a scoreless ninth and banked a win...Roger Clemens started for eighth place Boston, but left with a mild leg cramp after two innings...he was followed by Mel Parnell for two and Luis Tiant for four innings, both of whom did well...Radatz (3-1 1.46) suffered his first loss this season.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

BOSTON BRAVES 3 - NEW YORK GIANTS 2...At the Polo Grounds, Boston's Phil Niekro and Gene Garber collaborated on a six hitter to squeeze by the first place Giants, who slipped back into a tie with the Pirates...winner Niekro (4-2 2.54) went into the eighth and gave up only two runs, neither was earned...with two men out and the score 3-2, he issued two walks...that was when Gene Garber strolled in from the bullpen and got the last four outs for his first save...Brave slugger Hank Aaron (.276) hammered his fourth home run and had three hits in all...Christy Mathewson (4-7 3.19) was the losing pitcher...third place Boston is now only two-and-a-half games behind the NL leaders.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES 8 -ST. LOUIS CARDINALS 7...The Pirates are back tied for first with the Giants in the National League pennant chase...In the friendly confines of Forbes Field, Pittsburgh slammed six doubles, led by Paul Waner and Bill Mazeroski, each with two...Mazeroski (.261) stroked three hits, Pie Traynor (.370), Waner (.292) and George Grantham (.304) swatted a pair of hits each...Mazeroski plated the winning tally in the eighth off of loser Al Hrabosky (0-3 4.81)...Bob Veale (4-2 4.42) benefited from the Bucs' offensive display and got the triumph, rescued by Kent Tekulve, who got save number three...he put the fourth place Cards down in order in the last two frames...Jesse Tannehill and Max Lanier started, but left early...Chick Hafey (.296), Ted Simmons (.304) and Frankie Frisch (.303) all walloped three hits each in defeat.

CHICAGO CUBS 3 - CINCINNATI REDS 1...Righthander Moe Brown (7-5 2.85) is really on a roll...this was his seventh straight victory and seventh straight complete game...during this stretch he has surrendered only 4 earned runs, five overall...he was very unimpressive and lost his first five games...this time the fifth place Reds managed only four hits off him...Bill Madlock (.296) sent a solo shot out of Wrigley Field in the second inning for the last place Bruins and Billy Hermann(.299) singled in the other two in the fourth...loser Jim Maloney (4-3 3.58) pitched well.

BROOKLYN DODGERS 5 - PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES 4 ...Ron Cey, a forgotten man on the bench for the Dodgers most of the season, but the .188 hitter rapped a two-out pinch two-bagger in the ninth off of reliever Jim Konstanty (3-4 3.71) to give Brooklyn a surprise come-from-behind victory...Philly lefthander Curt Simmons was in control and went into the last inning with a 4-2 lead, but couldn't hold it...Don Sutton twirled the first seven innings for Brooklyn...his relief Ron Perranoski (5-2 1.91) gave up a run in two innings, but still picked up the win...Dodger outfielder Gary Sheffield (.266) garnered three hits, including his fifth homer and Zach Wheat (.312) bashed a couple of base hits...Richie Ashburn (.306) and Chuck Klein (.305) were best for Philadelphia with two hits apiece...Konstanty was the losing pitcher.
