Johnson records 19th defense
September 2, 1908
Jack Johnson (31-1) scored a UD15 over #5 James Jeffries (31-6) for his record 19th defense of the LBA HW title.
Johnson dominated the first 5 rounds to build a substantial lead. The 6th round was the best of the fight with both fighters landing big bombs. Johnson dropped to one knee late in the round giving Jeffries the advantage. Both came away from the round with a swollen eye.
Johnson suffered a cut over his left eye in the 7th, but then used his superior defense for the remainder of the fight to cruise to a victory.
I had it 146-140. Tom Trunzo, ringside expert, had it 145-140. The official judges saw it 144-141/145-141/146-140.
