"My heart dropped," said Cichon, Remillard's trainer. "That was my worst fear."

"It was always in the back of my mind," Remillard said. "`What if I got hit? What would happen if I got hit?' Today I learned. I can take it and come back from it."

Remillard took a pop the likes of which he hadn't yet felt as a pro and rallied from it, knocking out Alexis Rubin in the second round of a scheduled four-round lightweight fight Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena.

In the main event, East Hartford's Eric Harding (23-3-1, 7 KOs) won a unanimous 12-round decision over Daniel Judah (20-1-3, 10 KOs) for the vacant NABF light heavyweight title.

Remillard, 19, of Manchester, improved to 6-0 with five knockouts. Equally important, he walked away knowing a little more about his makeup.

Rubin (0-4) came out swinging wildly.

"I was really expecting him to be just kind of like that, a little bit wild," Remillard said. "It's hard to look good against a guy that's wild. But I felt good. When he saw that he got me a little busy, that probably stepped up his confidence and that's when he came out swinging."

A three-punch combo concluding with a straight left to the head floored Rubin 1:14 into the fight.

But Rubin got right up and kept sending shots at Remillard. Two minutes into the first round, a wild roundhouse right caught Remillard in the head, staggering him into the ropes.

"I'd say it was the hardest [punch] I've taken in the pro game," Remillard said. "But I trained for that. I trained for a war. I trained to get hit like that.

"I'm kind of glad I took that shot because I wasn't used to it. With the [amateur] headgear on it's totally different. With the 12-ounce gloves on it's different. With the 8-ounce gloves you can't afford to have your hands down. I was shaken. I wouldn't say I was hurt though. I came right back."

Remillard came out aggressively in the second round and was quickly in total control.

Midway through the round, Remillard caught Rubin with a right that dropped him to a knee. Rubin got up and Remillard pounced, flooring Rubin again with a left-right combo 2:14 into the round. Rubin got to his feet but referee John Callas stopped the fight at 2:32.

"In a way I'm glad he got hit," Cichon said. "It says a lot for Matt. It says a lot for his heart. It says a lot for his conditioning and his will to win. Some other kids may have just folded."
