The first two and a half months of the season are now in the books, and there have been some surprises in both leagues.

In the American League, the Orioles continue to hold the top spot, but it is not without a visitor. The Detroit Tigers, a team that barely finished above the .500 mark last season, have tied the Orioles for first place. The Tigers are getting excellent seasons from pitcher Ed Siever and batters Kid Elberfeld and Sport McAllister. If they can hold this momentum, the Orioles may be in some trouble. Last year's dark horse team, the Philadelphia Athletics, were hit with an injury to Eddie Plank earlier in the season and have yet to recover.

The National League has many of the usual teams in competition for the league crown, but there is a surprise leader. The Cincinnati Reds, much like the Detroit Tigers in the American League, finished just above .500 last season, but are now atop the league. They have gotten excellent seasons from both Sam Crawford and Noodles Hahn, and with their youth, they could be a feared team for years to come. While the Phillies are in 2nd, reigning MVB Ed Delahanty is struggling mightily this year, hitting under .250. The rest of the team has picked up what Ed has not been able to do.

Prospect Watch

Dieter Kahle, CF-Chicago Orphans

Dieter has struggled at times, but he still has been a consistant part of the Orphans' offense. They are two games above .500, and without him, they would be much worse.

Jim St. Vrain, SP-Washington Senators

St. Vrain has become an instant ace in Washington, placing himself in the top three in both wins, ERA and strikeouts on the team. Although Washington is still struggling, he has been quite good.

Addie Joss, SP-Boston Beaneaters

Joss has had many injuries in his rookie season, slowing his production and limiting his wins. The fact that the Beaneaters are in dead last doesn't help much, either.
