Vic Willis fashioned a solid start, stopping the Cubs on four hits with three whiffs and one walk...Paul Waner (.288) and Roberto Clemente (.258) were the Buccos top batters with a couple of rbi's each...Waner whacked a two-run homer.

Pittsburgh got to Fergie Jenkins for five runs in the first three innings, but couldn't finish him off...Jenkins tossed nothing but goose eggs over the last six frames to get his 15th triumph...He fanned three and walked nobody...Turkey Stearnes (.318) paced Chicago with two hits, a home run, two rbi's and three runs scored...Ernie Banks (.230) walloped his 28th roundtripper among his three hits, scored three and drove in two and Ryne Sandberg (.235) in a rare start had two hits and two rbi's.

Philly ace Pete Alexander had the flu and lasted only six innings and left with a 7-2 lead, which was good enough for his 18th win...he is now tied with Chicago Cub Moe Brown for the most in the majors...Alexander limited the Braves to two runs, struck out six and issued one walk...Tug McGraw took over, but was battered by Boston in the seventh...Curt Schilling came to the rescue and got his fourth save with two plus scoreless innings. Del Ennis (.269) drove in two for the Phils and Chuck Klein (.294) homered...only bright star for Boston was Wally Berger (.260) with a fourbagger and four runs batted in...three Brave errors helped their demise and brought defeat to loser Tom Glavine, who only gave up 3 earned runs.

The Phillies may have finally found a fifth starter...Steve Carlton notched another win in his late season resurgence...he went the distance and fired strikes past ten Braves...Biz Mackey (.338) led Philadelphia's thirteen-hit offense, going 3-4 with Richie Ashburn (.317) and Fresco Thompson (.292) adding two each...Boston ace, Greg Maddux had an off day, was tagged for 13 hits and failed to get win #17.

The Giants' heavy hitters lambasted Dodger reliever Don Drysdale in a four-run ninth to gain a split in the twinbill...Willie Mays (.242) led the NY hit brigade with three hits, four rbi's , three runs scored and a home run...three other Giants garnered three hits apiece -- Bill Terry (.314), Barry Bonds (.290) and Freddie Lindstrom (.288)...Brooklyn starter Dazzy Vance had a rough outing and gave up five runs in seven innings...he was going for his 18th win...Dick Nen got the last six outs for the victory, but was nicked for a game-tying bash in the eighth by Duke Snider (.254).

ST. LOUIS DESTROYS REDLEGS WITH 15-HIT AVALANCHE...TAKES BOTH GAMES OF THE DOUBLEHEADER

It was a career day for Stan "The Man" Musial (.274) -- in the nightcap he continued to rip the Reds...seven rbi's, five hits, five runs scored, including two fourbaggers and two doubles...for the twinbill he was 8 for 9 with 3 doubles, 3 homers, 8 rbi's and 8 runs scored...a remarkable day...Rogers Hornsby (.296) also chipped in a home run and three rbi's...Bob Gibson had a good on the mound, too...he subdued Cincinnati on a seven-hitter, fanning four and walking none for his 14th victory...Smokey Joe Williams continued to struggle and picked up another loss...He was expected to be an outstanding addition to Cincy weak pitching corps.
