1909 World Series

BOX SCORES

Catobase Updated! Player pages still loading as I post this

The Giants came out swinging in their first World Series. By the end of the 5th inning, they had tagged AL Top Pitcher Norwood Gibson for 6 runs. The Red Sox could get nothing going against Hooks Wiltse, who allowed just 3 hits, and New York won 6-0. Game 2 was another story. The Red Sox scored a run in the 2nd off NL Top Rookie Rube Marquard and added 7 more runs in the 3rd. They went on to beat New York 9-1 with the victory going to AL Top Rookie Joe Wood.

In Game 3, the Giants looked to regain the series lead. The score was 5-2 in New York's favor going into the bottom of the 8th. Jake Stahl and Bill Carrigan led off the inning with singles off Doc Crandall. Then Heinie Wagner loaded the bases when rookie SS Tillie Shafer booted a hard hit grounder. Pitcher Ralph Glaze helped his own cause with a bases clearing double that knotted the score at 5. After a sac bun moved Glaze to third, another rookie, Tris Speaker, singled him home for the eventual winning run.

Game 4 was a rematch of team aces. Boston's Norwood Gibson lost Game 1 to Hooks Wiltse, but both pitchers were excellent on this day. The Giants were up 2-1 until Jake Stahl hit a 2-run single in the 7th to give Boston the lead. Not wanting to fall behind 3-1 in the series, Boston CF Curt Bernard hit a triple off Gibson with 2 outs in the 9th and scored when Tille Shafer's grounder toward the hole on the right side of the infield was misplayed by Hobe Ferris. The game went to the 13th inning with all pitchers doing well. New York's Christy Mathewson had a 1-2-3 12th inning against the heart of the Boston order, but he allowed a leadoff single to Top Batter Harry Lord in the 13th. After getting Gravvy Cravath to fly out, catcher Bill Carrigan reached base on another Tillie Shafer error. George Stone then got a pinch hit single, scoring Lord and winning the game.

In Game 5, New York took a 2-0 lead on Joe Wood. Then in the 6th, Wood walked to lead off the inning, and one out later, stole second. Boston catcher Pat Crisham was so surprised by the move that he threw the ball into CF, allowing Wood to move to 3rd. With two outs, Jake Stahl singled Wood home. In the top of the 7th, Moose McCormick doubled Crisham home, but Crisham was thrown out at the plate by LF Patsy Dougherty. Then in the bottom of that inning, Cravath led off with a walk, followed by a Charlie Hemphill single. Freddy Parent reached base on an error by 2B Larry Doyle, allowing Cravath to score and tie the game. A sac bunt advanced both runners to 2nd and 3rd. Then after Joe Wood struck out, Dougherty again helped the team with a 2-run double, giving Boston a 4-2 lead. The Red Sox added another run in the 8th on a Jake Stahl home run, and Boston won the game 5-2.

This was Boston's 4th trip to the World Series in 5 years, and their second championship in three years.

Winner, 4-1: Boston Red Sox, 2nd Championship, 4th Pennant

New York Giants, 3rd pennant
