In a tense nailbiter with the Dodgers, Pittsburgh's steady Sam Leever and Willie Stargell were the stars in a vital victory to move them 1.5 games up on second place Philadelphia...Leever authored a 5-hit shutout and Stargell (.243) hit a fifth inning clout for the only run of the game...losing pitcher Orel "Bulldog" Hershiser hurled a strong game, too...he went 7 innings, yielded only 1 run on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts.

Redbird hurler Jess Haines was tough as nails in the clutch and chunked St. Louis to an important victory over the second place Phils...he was touched for 9 hits, but permitted only 3 runs and none over the last 6 frames..Haines struck out 8 Phils and allowed 3 walks...Chick Hafey (.303) led the Cardinal hit parade with 3-4, 2 runs scored and 2 rbis and Rogers Hornsby (.298) went 2-4 scored twice and pushed 2 runs in...both Hafey and Hornsby hammered their 11th homers of the year...2 runs in the sixth and 3 in the seventh finished off the struggling Robin Roberts.

It was another stellar mound performance for Mordecai Brown, who got his 19th triumph and 6th shutout, both tops in the Alltime Allstar Association...this time he horsecollared the Giants on 4 hits, fanned 6 and gave free passes to a couple of batters...this severely damaged NY's pennant hopes...a 2-run bomb by Turkey Stearnes (.312) in the first was all the runs Brown needed...Hack Wilson (.268) also cracked a solo salvo...rookie Rube Marquard made his debut appearance and was roughed up by Chicago and caught the loss...NY manager John McGraw added him to the roster for some needed pitching help...he replaced the injured Freddie Fitzsimmons...McGraw and the Giants are hoping for a last minute miracle in the NL pennant chase...they are slated to do battle with Pittsburgh in 6 games in the final week and a half of the season.
