NATIONAL LEAGUE
Two critical series open today in the National League. First place Pittsburgh, leading in the race by 2 games over the Phillies and 3 ahead of New York, opens a 4-game 3-day set with the third place Giants at Forbes Field. And Philadelphia will go up against the cellar-dwelling Reds on the road.
The Pirates and Giants will also close out the season against one another at the Polo Grounds in the last three games of the season. The Phils' finale series will again be against Cincy in a 3-game engagement at the Vet.
Here are the probable pitching matchups:
New York at Pittsburgh
Friday: Marichal (14-9 3.32) vs. Willis (9-10 3.05)
Saturday: Hubbell (13-10 2.54) vs. Kremer (10-7 2.98)
Sunday: (first game) Mathewson (14-11 3.07) vs. Phillippe (15-8 2.89)

Philadelphia at Cincinnati
