04-05-1903 WWBU WW Title Tournament Semi-Finals
A lot of intrigue had built for the main event on WW Tournament semi-final night as Felix Trinidad (#1, 22-2-0) prepared to face perhaps his biggest test in the unproven Sharmba Mitchell (#4, 17-0-0). Mitchell had less experience, but in their only fight against the same foe, Mitchell was able to take a strong unanimous decision over Packy McFarland over 10 rounds while Trinidad barely eked out a Majority Decision win. The bout opened slowly as both fighters went though a feeling out process in the first stanza but Mitchell found that he had the speed advantage and played it to the fullest in the second with a blistering array of punches. The boxing lesson continued through the middle stages of the bout and with the exception of a powerful flurry in the fourth round with nary a whimper from Trinidad. Finally in the eighth Trinidad made a dent on the contest with a fierce display of punching that had Mitchell in trouble along the ropes. The ninth was a classic with the two fighters trading serious leather as first one then the other held the advantage. This was Trinidad’s game however and he was revitalised by the slugging and only some sterling counter punching work from Mitchell held him off in the tenth. After a tough eleventh that many observers considered an even round, Mitchell out boxed and out thought Trinidad in the twelfth to take the unanimous decision on the judges cards 117-112, 118-111 and 116-112.
In the semi main event the other semi final played out between Packy McFarland (#2, 18-3-0) and Reuben Shank (#3, 16-4-1). McFarland was the overwhelming favourite in the press gallery and with the book makers, however there had been whispers recently that McFarland had been too over the top in his preparations. McFarland showed the benefit of the extra training early, quickly establishing his range and dictating the flow of the fight with all the opening three rounds being widely in his favour. The fourth continued in that vein but punctuated by Shank being landed on his back with a wicked combination on the button. The fifth found Shank in trouble again after a McFarland right hand that had him groping for the ropes. With significant swelling a mounting problem, Shank rallied to take the sixth before receiving a sustained beating from McFarland that reached crescendo in the tenth with two knockdowns prompting the referee to mercifully call the bout. McFarland was through to the tourney final with a dominant 10th round TKO victory.
