WWBU Monthly June 1903 - Marquee Bouts
21-05-1903 WWBU HW Title, Righetti (Champ) v Neusel
Six weeks after his first successful defence, WWBU champion Alfio Righetti (24-0-1) once more stepped into the ring, this time in an all European affair against German Walter Neusel (#8, 15-4-1). Experts believe that Neusel is a dangerous opponent for Righetti to pick as a fill in fight prior to facing his mandatory later in the year, with reasonable power and a well schooled European style, however they all believe that Righetti is rightfully the favourite. The bout starts well with Righetti establishing his offence at a comfortable range while Neusel tries to force the action, landing some telling blows while absorbing a reasonable amount of leather. That would be the pattern of the second and third rounds, with Righetti getting the better of the action. Righetti seems to be in charge in the fourth till late in the round Neusel lands a big right hand that has the champ in survival mode till the bell.
Righetti recovered between rounds and dominated the action in the next five rounds with a particularly brutal ninth where Righetti had Neusel in trouble on the ropes after a series of hard right and left hooks and crosses. With a swollen right eye giving him trouble, Neusel bravely took the eleventh but Righetti took back control the next round and the German looked spent. Righetti cruised through the last three rounds to take the fight 145-140, 144-141 and 143-142 via a unanimous decision.
