20th May 1889 - Royal Albert Hall
BW - Billy Plimmer (3-0) UD10 Joe Gates (1-7)
Bob Fitzsimmons (18-6) UD10 Pete McCoy (8-9-2)
Vacant EBU Heavyweight Title
Peter Maher (11-3) UD12 Jim Fell (5-9-2)
Maher added the European belt to his Commonwealth title at Heavyweight. Fell was down twice in the fight and was a wide margin points loser.
As was the case after winning the Commonwealth title, Maher 'called out' ex Heavyweight World Champion Bob Fitzsimmons. Maher stated that for the right purse he would be willing to lay both his titles on the line.
Inaugural British & Commonwealth Bantamweight Title
George Dixon (18-3) UD12 Walter Croot (9-2)
Dixon became the first holder of the British & Commonwealth Bantamweight Title by way of a wide margin points victory.
Dixon threatened to overrun Croot and scored the only knockdown of the fight in the 8th round, strangely enough thereafter he took his foot of the pedal and coasted to victory.
Holding both the British & Commonwealth and USBA title could prove to be a logistical problem for Dixon, however some experts believe he will have the World Title belt around his waist in the near future.
