It was crunch time between the NL's number one and number three teams...in the opener of a twinbill Pittsburgh prevailed...Deacon Phillippe tossed a crafty 9-hit shutout to top Christy Mathewson...Phillippe struck out 7 and walked none in a fine outing...Mathewson whiffed 10 and also had perfect control and walked no one...but in the fifth he gave up a single to Roberto Clemente (.253) and a rbi double and single to Willie Stargell (.243) and Jason Kendall (.278) respectively.

Fireballer Jim Maloney put a halt to Philadelphia's attempt to move into a first place tie in the National League with a gutsied 8-strikeout performance...Curt Schilling, the Phillies' best reliever lately, was called on to start, but couldn't get the job done...3 errors gave away 3 unearned runs to help seal his fate...Ed Roush (.305) rapped 3-5 and drove in 2 runs and Vada Pinson (.301) collected 2-5 with 2 rbis...at the end of the day the Phillies still trail first place Pittsburgh by one game with only 7 to play.

BOSTON AND NIEKRO FLUTTER BY REDBIRDS IN FIRST GAME

It was over in the first inning when Chipper Jones (.251) clobbered a 3-run clout off loser Larry Jackson...Phil Niekro, relying on his fine flutterball, hurled a solid 7 innings for the win, holding the Cards to one run and 6 hits...Johnny Sain got his first save, despite giving up a ninth inning homer to Ted Simmons (.238)...Johnny Logan (.281) and Wally Berger (.261) both belted 3 hits for the victors.

ST. LOUIS' BRECHEEN WINS IN A CATWALK OVER BRAVES TO TAKE GAME TWO

The second game was also decided in the first inning...this time a 5-run outbreak won it for the Cardinals to gain a split in the twinbill...a 3-run bash by Rogers Hornsby (.297) and a 2-run shot by Tim McCarver (.224) decided the issue...Harry "the Cat" Brecheen got his first start since coming back from a two-month stint on the DL and was superb with a 2-hitter with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts...St. Louis is still 4 games behind the NL-leading Pirates.

BROOKLYN SQUEEZES BY BRUINS TO TAKE OPENER

In the first game the Dodgers jumped off to an 8-3 lead, then held on as the Cubs mounted an comeback, but could not get any closer than one run...relief specialist Ron Perranoski managed to save it for the struggling Don Sutton...Brooklyn's Zach Wheat (.319) drilled 3 hits and scored twice, while Jackie Robinson (.264) and Gary Sheffield (.263) knocked in 2 runs each...Turkey Stearnes (.321) was the Chicago offensive star with 2 hits, his 21st home run and 3 rbis...Ernie Banks (.228) regained the top spot in the NL home run derby with his 29th of the year, one ahead of NY's Barry Bonds and 2 up on the Phils' Chuck Klein.

Chicub Ed Reulbach limited the Dodgers to 6 hits and one earned run to divide the doubleheader...he walked one and fanned 3...Ernie Banks (.229) and Turkey Stearnes (.324) led the Chicago attack with home runs and they ripped losing pitcher Don Newcombe for all 6 runs in the first 5 frames and hung him with his 7th successive loss...NL leader Banks got his 30th roundtripper of the season...it was Stearnes' 22nd in only a half season.
