ALLTIME ALLSTAR ASSOCIATION
Monday, September 1, 1901
It is Labor Day Monday in the AAA with all teams scheduled to play twinbills. Pitching corps will be stressed to the limits because of back-to-back doubleheaders yesterday and today. With both pennant races going down to the wire, pitching rotations could be crucial for the contending ballclubs. Most clubs will have to go into the bullpen for a rested starter. The deep staffs will have an advantage over the last seven games of the season.
In the tense NL title chase, first place Pittsburgh will send Jess Tannehill (9-10) and Vic Willis (9-10) up against two tough Dodger hurlers, Bulldog Hershiser (8-9) and Sandy Koufax (12-8) at Ebbets Field. Fifth place Brooklyn has an edge here. It could be a rough series for the Pirates as they might have to face Dazzy Vance (18-6) in the finale of the 4-game set with second line pitching.
Second place Philadelphia, trailing by one game, really has a tough task with the fourth place Cardinals at the Vet. St. Louis has its aces ready with John Tudor (13-5) and Bob Gibson (14-8) set to pitch against the Phils' Steve Carlton (6-12) and Curt Simmons (7-10) . None of Philadelphia frontline pitchers will be available until the third game of the series. Pete Alexander (18-7) is scheduled for that game. The Redbirds are four games behind the NL leaders.
The third place New York Giants, currently 3 games out, will be at home at the Polo Grounds. They will tangle with the well-rested Chicago Cubs, who will have Mordecai Brown (19-9) and Larry French (3-4) ready for duty. Gaylord Perry (7-13) and Juan Marichal (14-9) will try to keep NY in the race. The Giants will also have to face Fergie Jenkins (15-10) and Lon Warneke (5-5) in games three and four. Freddie Fitzsimmons (0-2) and Carl Hubbell (14-10) will be slated to oppose them.
Over in the American League, it is down to just two teams, the number one club, the slumping New York Yankees and the suddenly revived Chicago White Sox. The Bombers have dropped 8 of their last 10, while the second place Pale Hose have taken 6 of 10 to narrow the lead to just 3 games with 7 games to be played.
Herb Pennock (6-6) and Ron Guidry (16-7) are pitted against the solid Philadelphia A's, who are finally playing up to their pre-season expectations. They have been one of the best clubs over the last half of the year. The Athletics will counter with Bobby Shantz (1-6) and Lefty Grove (12-9). Whitey Ford (14-10) and Goofy Gomez (15-10) will get the call in the last two games of the series at Shibe Park. It looks like Catfish Hunter (12-9) and Rube Waddell (8-9) will be going for Philly.
At Comiskey Park the White Sox will play host to the seventh place Senators. Joe Horlen (14-8) and Gary Peters (3-6) are slated to be on the hill for Chicago and opposed by Firpo Marberry (4-7) and Jim Perry (5-7). Ed Walsh (11-9) and Wilbur Wood (14-10) might be the starters in games three and four with Dutch Leonard (10-10) and Walter Johnson (9-16) on the mound for the Capitol City club.
Second line pitching could decide who goes to the World Series.
