Just when they needed it, both Babe Ruth (.306) and Ron Guidry stepped up to the plate and to the mound for NY...Babe bombed 2 into the stands and drove in 7 runs...he now leads the AAA with 34 homers...Guidry hurled a 5-hitter and gunned down 9 batters on strikes for his 17th victory...Lou Gehrig (.321) slammed 4 hits and plated 2.

Philadelpia got revenge in the nightcap by rapping out 18 hits for an easy triumph over the first place Yankees...little-use second sacker Danny Murphy (.280) led the barrage with 4 hits and 4 rbi's...John Henry Lloyd (.334) drove in 3...Jimmie Foxx (.254), Bob Johnson (.225) and Carney Lansford (.344) knocked in 2 each in the runaway...regular reliever Bobby Shantz got the start and scattered 10 hits as he cruised to victory with the big bat backing...Philadelphia, one of the hottest teams in the second half of the season, moved into a tie for third place with Detroit, who lost twice to Boston.

The Senators sidetracked the White Sox express in their bid to gain ground on the AL leading Yankees by splitting the doubleheader...in game one Washington's Firpo Marberry walked a bunch, but still managed to hold Chicago at bay with men on base...Marberry checked the Sox on 7 hits with 3 K's and 6 BB's...losing pitcher Joe Horlen was solid for the White Sox, surrendering 3 runs and 10 hits with 6 strikeouts and a walk...the Nats Heinie Manush (.314) went 4-4 and singled in the winning run in the eighth...he drove in Goose Goslin (.311), who had doubled.

Chicago bounced back from a tough defeat in the first game to trounce the Senators...the Pale Hose plastered 15 hits off 4 Washington pitchers, paced by Buck Weaver (.288), Harold Baines (.282) and Eddie Collins (.325), all with 2 rbi's...Gary Peters, relegated to the bullpen for most of the season, got the start and responded with a good effort for the win...he fanned 8 and walked 3.

BOSTON SWINGS BIG BATS AT FENWAY...DEALS DETROIT DOUBLE DOSE OF DEFEAT

Boston came back 3 times to take the first game...coming back from 3-0, 6-3 and 7-6 deficits...in the bottom of the ninth Joe Cronin (.269) tied it with a double, scoring Oscar Charleston (.319)...then Jackie Jensen (.177) won the game with a single off losing pitcher Denny McLain...Dick Radatz was the winner, but gave up a run in the top of the ninth...Red Sox Ted Williams (.263) drove in 3 runs and now has 102 for the year, 4th in the AL.

The Red Sox won game two in a late inning rally to sweep a pair from Detroit, dropping them into a third place tie with the Philadelphia Athletics...winning pitcher Pedro Martinez shot down the Tigers with only one hit and 4 strikeouts over the last 3 frames...Joe Cronin (.272) sent them ahead 5-4 with a seventh inning single off of loser Jack Morris to score Nomar Garciaparra...Garciaparra (.291) and Dom DiMaggio (.280) each delivered 3 hits to top the Bosox 14-hit attack...Cronin and Mo Vaughn (.233) cracked in 2 rbi's apiece.

Leftly Herb Score was firing on all cylinders with a 5-hit whitewash of the Browns...he scorched 10 via the strikeout mode and walked only 2...in the sixth a bases-loaded base on balls to Luke Easter (.285) sent across Willie Wells (.272) with the game's only score...Dennis Martinez lost another tough decision, yielding only 6 hits in 7 innings and striking out 8.

BROWNS AND INDIANS SWAP SHUTOUTS...PAPPAS OUTSTANDING IN 4-HITTER

Milt Pappas got only his fourth starting role of the season and sizzled with a splendid 4-hit shutout...he fanned 8 and walked one batter...all of the hits were singles...the Browns backed him with 10 hits, mainly from Cal Ripken (.228) and Brooks Robinson (.201) with 4 and 3 hits respectively... Ripken powered in 3 runs with 2 doubles, while Robinson drove in one...wildness by loser Mike Garcia put the Indians in a hole they never could get out of with 7 walks in 5 innings of work.
