Pittsburgh showed its true mettle by coming back in the ninth to tie the game at 4-4, then winning it in the eleventh...Orel Hershiser only walked 2 in the game, but they were back-to-back in the ninth...Jason Kendall (.277) walked to force in one run, then PH Lloyd Waner (.272) sent it into overtime with a sacrifice fly...in the eleventh Kendall singled in the winning run of loser Burleigh Grimes...Pie Traynor's (.367) groundout supplied an insurance run...Roy Face picked up the win with 3 scoreless innings.

The Pirates needed another ninth-inning rally and they got it...trailing 5-3 and with Sandy Koufax seemingly in command, they rallied for 4 runs to take both ends of the doubleheader...Roberto Clemente's (.256) 2-run clout off Ron Perranoski brought home the victory...Roy Face struggled, but also got credit for the nightcap, giving up 2 runs in 3 innings...with the double win the Pirates moved 2 games ahead of the second place Phillies.

In the opener Philadelphia needed a win in the worst way and they got it from southpaw Steve Carlton...He stumped the Redbirds on 7 hits, while striking out 9...Dick Allen (.241) had a home run and 4 rbi's and Mike Schmidt (.222) launched one, too...it was Carlton's 3rd straight win since being elevated to the starting rotation...Chuck Klein (.299) moved into a tie for the NL RBI lead with NY's Barry Bonds and Cincy's Frank Robinson...all have 96 RBI's.

The Cards copped a split with the Phils...Bob Gibson pitched a gritty 8-hitter and fanned 10 for his 15th victory...in the tenth Johnny Mize (.269) singled and sent Stan Musial (.275) in from second with the winning score...Musial had led off with a double...in the first Mize also doubled in a pair of runs...starter Curt Simmons for the Phils did a good job, going 8 innings and left with a 3-3 deadlock...both clubs could not afford to lose a game...Philadelphia fell 2 games behind the front-running Pirates, while the Redbirds are 5 games out with only 5 to go.

In an almost must-win situation Gaylord Perry bested one of the best pitchers in the NL and AAA, Mordecai Brown...Perry throttled the Cubs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts and just one base on balls...Brown held the Giants to 5 hits, fanned 5 and doled out one free pass, but didn't get his 20th victory...in the last of the ninth a leadoff single by Bill Terry (.317), a sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and Barry Bonds' (.288) single combined to win it.

In the celler-dwellers doubleheaders at Braves Field, Boston took game one with a fine performance by Warren Spahn...he had a rough competitor in Cincinnati's Gary Nolan...both allowed 6 hits and one walk...Spahn whiffed 5 and Nolan sat down 7...a Tony Perez (.252) one-base hit, Frank McCormick (.262) double and Ernie Lombardi (.256) sac fly produced the Reds' only run in the fifth...Buck Leonard's (.200) single and Andruw Jones' (.194) sacrifice fly drove in the Braves' scores in the seventh to win it.
CINCINNATI AND DONAHUE FIGHTS OFF BRAVES LAST INNING RALLY...DIVIDES THE 'HEADER

The Reds and Braves traded one-run battles...Pete Donahue chucked a 5-hitter with 7 K's and no walks...with one out in the last of the ninth Chipper Jones smacked a 2-run smash to close it to 4-3, but Donahue got the final 2 outs to triumph...Jones (.257) was his only nemesis, going 4-4 with 2 HR's and 3 RBI's...Leo Cardenas (.184) punched in a pair of scores for Cincy...Bret Boone (.257) and Pete Rose (.289) belted in one run each.
