NY is out of the running, but the Giants will play a big part in deciding who wins the NL...the Pirates only need one win or one loss by the Phillies to take the title...Juan Marichal made sure they didn't win today...he spread out 10 base hits, fired third strikes by 10 Bucs and walked none...Bill Terry's (.313) sac fly brought in the winning run in the third inning...Jeff Kent (.273) drove in 2 for NY.

Prince Hal Newhouser surrendered 9 hits to the White Sox, but was tough to score on...he whiffed 8, while walking 4 and chalked up his 13th win this year...Sam Crawford (.307) and Lou Whitaker (.222) hammered in 2 runs each...Ty Cobb (.338) went 3-5 and is now only 1 percentage point behind Joe Jackson (.339) of Chicago for the AL batting title...Jackson was 1-4 today.
Pittsburgh is ahead by 1.5 games in the National League. Philadelphia is second with the Giants in third 2 games behind. The Pirates will close out the regular season tomorrow in a single game at the Polo Grounds. Ray Kremer (10-9 3.12) is set to start for Pittsburgh, with Deacon Phillippe (16-9 2.82) ready to go in relief. New York has tough Carl Hubbell (15-10 2.34) on the mound.
The Phillies end their season at home at Veterans Stadium, hosting the last place Reds in a twinbill. Curt Simmons (7-10 3.63) will pitch the opener with Pete Alexander (18-8 2.24) going in the nightcap. Both are must wins for Philadelphia. Gary Nolan (4-6 3.16) and Pete Donahue (9-14 3.71) will oppose them.
Two wins by the Phillies and a loss by the Pirates will force a one game playoff for the NL crown.
