PIRATES' LEEVER AND FACE TEAM UP TO DEADLOCK SERIES AT 1-1
It was a windy, cool, cloudy and dismal afternoon at Yankee Stadium for the hometown fans and their beloved Yankees. Pittsburgh held the NY big guns in check to win 5-2 and evened the World Series at one game apiece in the best-of-nine series.
New York starter Whitey Ford had an off day and was not effective. He was tagged for four runs in the fourth. A free pass to Arky Vaughan (.556) and a single by Ralph Kiner (.400) put runners on first and second. Jason Kendall (.200), yesterday's goat, got a reprieve today and drove in the first run of the game with a single to score Vaughan. Bill Mazeroski (.273) then ripped a 2-run single to make it 3-0 with both Kiner and Kendall crossing the plate. Leever (.333) hit a single to right to score Maz from second. Pittsburgh was now up 4-0.
The Yanks retaliated with a run in the sixth. Base hits by Babe Ruth (.364), Flash Gordon (.300) and Bill Dickey (.222) made it 4-1.
The Pirates increased it 5-1 in the top of the seventh against Rube Foster. Pie Traynor (.250) started the inning off with a twobagger, move to third on Paul Waner's (.182) sacrifice bunt and scored on Honus Wagner (.100) deep fly to center.
In the top of the eighth, due to Leever's lack of control, the New York had a golden opportunity to get back in the game. Lou Gehrig (.364) singled to lead off, Gordon walked, Dickey fanned, Jeter walked and Nettles whiffed for out number two. Pinchhitter Bernie Williams then got the third free pass of the inning to force in a run. That made it 5-2. Manager Danny Murtaugh went to the bullpen for his favorite fireman, Roy Face, who got Earl Combs (.182) to pop out to shallow center to end the inning. In the ninth Face walked Gehrig with two outs and then retired Joe Gordon on a grounder to end the game and even the series.
In game three Pittsburgh will go with righthander Ray Kremer (10-10 3.38) on the hill. Casey Stengel will go with his third straight southpaw, Ron Guidry (18-7 3.52).
With the Yanks going with lefties, Murtaugh has gone with Ralph Kiner in left, Bill Mazeroski at second base and Honus Wagner at first. Late in the season he had been using lefthanded power-hitting Willie Stargell at first and versatile Wagner at second. Kiner and Lloyd Waner had platooned in left. So far the move has made Murtaugh look good. Mazeroski has delivered timely hits and has been superb at second. In the World Series opener the Buccos had 5 double plays.
