Jeff, you do not need to install the game twice. Uninstall it completely, then download version 2.0.27 and install it. The "patch" includes all files. Well, it's more an updated version than a patch then...
After installing the update need to switch back to your previous database. To do so, open the Game Options screen, and select the previous database from the Databases dropdown list.
I've never seen that only a part of the fighters are loaded ("up to the letter L"). Something must have gone really wrong during the installation...
