MLB Affiliated Summer Leagues

The following two leagues are academy leagues run by MLB clubs in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

League: Dominican Summer League (DSL)

Teams: 32
Structure: Six divisions; División Cibao, División Boca Chica (divided into Americana and Nacional subdivisions), División Santo Domingo Oeste, Division Santo Domingo Norte, and División San Pedro de Macorís
Roster Restrictions: There is a roster limit of 35 players, with 30 being active and eligible to play in a given game (teams usually have between 10 and 20 inactive players training at their camps as well). No more than eight players may be 20 years old or older and no more than two players may be 21 years old or older. At least 10 of the players must be pitchers. No player may have four or more years of prior Minor League service. Most players are Dominican.
Regular Season: All divisions play 72 games over 84 calendar days, except for Cibao which plays 68 games. The league start date is the first Saturday in June and the end date is the last Friday in August. The Santo Domingo Oeste, Santo Domingo Norte, and San Pedro de Macorís divisions do not play games on Sundays. The Boca Chico division has a rotating off-day (due to an odd number of teams through out the season) as well as two division-wide off days. The Cibao division does not have off-days. There are no inter-divisional games. The Santo Domingo Oeste, Santo Domingo Norte, and San Pedro de Macorís divisions have game start times at 10:30 AM; Cibao games start at 12:00 PM; Boca Chica games start at 11:30 AM.

Postseason: The six divisional (counting Boca Chica’s two subdivisions separately) winners advance to the playoffs and are ranked by their winning percentage. The top two ranked teams receive a bye to the second round of the playoffs. The remaining teams play in the best-of-three series (Primera Serie Semi-Final), with first and second games played at the higher ranked team’s field. The winners advance to the best-of-three series, the Segunda Serie Semi-Final. The top ranked team plays versus the lowest ranked advancing team; the other two teams play versus each other. The first and second games played at the higher ranked team’s field. The winners advance to the best-of-five Serie Final for league championship. The series is played at the higher ranked team’s home field for the first, third, and fifth games. The playoffs begin on the first Sunday after the end of the regular season and there is an off-day between each round.
All-Star Game: There is an all-star game on the third Sunday in July.
Tryouts/Draft: Teams hold tryout camps at their training facilities. Teams sign on average 18 players each year. About 1 in 10 gets a call-back. The youngest age at which a player may be signed by a MLB team is 16 years old.
Awards: ? Unknown ?
Expenses: Players are signed for, on average, $30000 with bonuses. The highest bonus currently given out are around $750K, with some teams (New York Yankees) occasionally giving out higher bonuses (one million+). The minimum salary is $300 per month, with an average salary of $800 per month. The players live at the training complex year round, where they train every day and learn English. Infrastructure costs range from around $200K to a few million (the Colorado Rockies spend $1.2 million on their facilities and are a mid-range team). According to the Denver Post article players sign 3-year contracts to cover their time at the academy until they are released or sent to the minors.

League: Venezuelan Summer League(VSL)

Teams: 10
Structure: One division
Roster Restrictions: Opening day rosters are due eight days prior to the start of the season. Each team has a roster limit of 35 active players with 30 allowed to be dressed from each game. On the active roster there may be no more than 12 players age 20 or older, and no more than four players age 21 or older, as of July 1. At least 10 players must be pitchers. No players on active roster may have more than four years of minor league service. The league is open to all Latin American Spanish-speaking countries except Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. In 2005, the league had players from Aruba, Brazil, Colombia, Curaçao, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
Regular Season: The regular season lasts for 72 games. Each team plays eight games (4, home; 4, away) versus each opponent. The season begins on the third Tuesday in May and ends on the first Saturday in August. Games are not played on Sundays until the last three weeks of the season. There are doubleheaders scheduled.
Postseason: The top two teams based on winning percentage advance to the playoffs. The playoffs begin on the first Sunday after the end of the regular season. The Final Serie is best-of-three with the first place club as the home team for the first and third games and the second game played at the second place club.

Awards: There are awards given to the best player at each position, RHP, LHP, DH, and reliever. There is also an MVP award, MVP for RHP, MVP for LHP, and MVP of the Final Serie.
