1917 World Series
Doc Crandall set the pace with a beautiful 3-hit shutout of the A's. Five Giants collected two hits off Philly's Joe Bush.
Game 1: Philadelphia 0 - New York 4
Jeff Tesreau and Chief Bender locked up in a well-pitched game. In the bottom of the 6th, the A's led 3-1. With runners on 1st and 3rd with one out, Giants CF Josh Devore, who went 4-for-4 on the day, singled. Heinie Groh scored to make it 3-2, but Fred Merkle was thrown out at 3rd by CF Bris Lord, essentially ending the rally. The Giants failed to score again and Philadelphia even the series.
Game 2: Philadelphia 3 - New York 2
Thanks to triples by Eddie Collins and Frank Baker, the A's scored 4 runs in the 4th off Rube Marquard and went on to win 6-2.
Game 3: New York 2 - Philadelphia 6
The rematch of Bush and Crandall remained scoreless through 6 innings. In the top of the 7th, Fred Merkle hit an RBI single to break the scoreless tie. Later in the inning, Buck Herzog hit a bases loaded single that drove in Larry Doyle. Catcher Hank Gowdy grounded out to end the threat. In the bottom of that inning, Frank Baker led off with a double. After a strike out, CF Bris Lord doubled Baker home. Amos Strunk singled but Lord was thrown out at home by Fred Snodgrass, and the A's lost 2-1.
Game 4: New York 2 - Philadelphia 1
The Giants led 3-1 after 5 innings. In the bottom of the 7th, the A's had a runner on 1st with two outs. Amos Strunk singled. Then shortstop John Knight hit a homerun to give Philly a 4-3 lead. The A's went on to add four more runs in the 8th and won 8-3.
Game 5: New York 3 - Philadelphia 8
Joe Jackson hit a 2-run homerun in the 6th inning off Rube Marquard to give Philly a 2-0 lead. In the 7th, Buck Herzog answered with a 2-run homerun of his own off Harry Krause. The game went to extra innings and in the bottom of the 10th, Fred Merkle hit a 2-run homerun with two outs off Bob Shawkey to win the game and tie the series at three games apiece.
Game 6: Philadelphia 2 - New York 4
In the seventh and deciding game, New York took a 2-1 lead in the 4th when Dave Robertson hit a sac fly, scoring Hank Gowdy in a close play at the plate. In the 6th, Gowdy came through with a 2-run single. The A's only had one more baserunner the rest of the day, and the Giants won the game and the series.
Game 7: Philadelphia 1 - New York 4
Winner, 4-3: New York Giants, 3rd Championship, 10th Pennant
Philadelphia Athletics, 8th Pennant
