AMERICAN LEAGUE

AL TOPSY-TURVY...INDIANS AND A'S ON TOP...YANKS AND TIGERS AT THE BOTTOM

It has been a bewildering first two weeks of the season in the American League. The defending World Series champions, the New York Yankees, are languishing in 6th place, already 3.5 games out of first. Cleveland and Philadelphia have jumped off to good starts with 7 and 3 records, tied for the top spot. Chicago is 7 and 4 in third, followed by St. Louis at 6 and 4. The Washington Senators are fifth with a 4-6 mark, Yankees 4-7, Detroit and Boston are last at 3-7.

The Athletics are no surprise, since they had the best overall record in the second half of the season last year. But last year's also-rans Cleveland and St. Louis are certainly creating a little noise in the early going.

Philadelphia has combined decent pitching by starters Lefty Grove (2-0), Rube Waddell (2-0) and Ed Plank (1-0) and fine hitting by Jimmie Foxx (.400/1/7), newcomer Shigeo Nagashima (.366/1/9), Mickey Cochrane (.303/2/12) and John Henry Lloyd (.300/1/5). As a team the A's are hitting .280 so far.

The Indians lead the AL in batting with a .289 average and 13 home runs (tied with the Cubs for the AAA lead), paced by Larry Doby (.469/3/10), rookie Omar Vizquel (.355/0/2), Nap Lajoie (.310/1/3), Earl Averill (.308/2/4) and Luke Easter (.273/3/9). Addie Joss (2-0) and Herb Score (2-0) are the top starters.

The Chicago White took 5 of 8 against the Yankees and are in third place. They have done it with timely hitting and haven't really hit or pitched well. But Manager Al Lopez doesn't care. Winning games is the important thing. Only Ed Walsh (1-0) and Ed Cicotte (2-1) have stood out on the mound thus far. Shoeless Joe Jackson (.350/1/9), Magglio Ordonez (.304/1/5) and Luis Aparicio (.282/0/7) have been the main hitters.

The Browns' pitching has been brilliant. They lead both leagues with a 2.60 team ERA. Hoyt Wilhelm (2-0), Mike Mussina (1-1), Dennis Martinez (1-1) and Jim Palmer (0-0) have been great in the early going. Manager Earl Weaver is really happy with his club's longball output. They have hit 9 to rank second in the AL and third in both leagues. Vern Stephens (.351/2/7), rookie Doug DeCinces (.365/2/6), George Sisler (.304/0/6) and Eddie Murray (.263/3/11) have all swung potent bats this year.

Connie Mack's Senators have been dismal this year in both hitting and pitching, down at the bottom with a .248 team BA and skyhigh 4.53 ERA. Only Camilo Pascual (1-1) and Dutch Leonard (1-1) have been effective on the hill. Old standbys, Goose Goslin (.378/1/5) and Cecil Travis (.342/0/7) again are the team's offensive sparkplugs. As a team they have hit only 4 homers, last in the AAA.

Casey Stengel's Bronx Bombers have been bleak so far, hitting a pathetic .226 with a mediocre 4.20 ERA. Whitey Ford (1-0) is the only solid starting pitcher up to now. Lou Gehrig (.350/4/12) is picking up where he left off last season, while Babe Ruth (.231/2/8) hasn't hit for average, but is driving in runs.

Cellar-dwellers Boston and Detroit both are off to a slow start. Neither club is hitting well or pitching well. The Red Sox's batting average is .255 with a 4.55 ERA, while the Tigers are at .254 and 4.33 on the ERA.

Boston's Smokey Joe Wood (1-0), George Ruth (1-1) and Pedro Martinez (0-2) have done well in the pitching department and Ted Williams (.308/3/9), Oscar Charleston (.250/3/6) and Dom DiMaggio (.333/1/2) have been the only hitters of note.

Only Hal Newhouser (1-0), rookie Masaichi Kaneda (0-0) and Tommy Bridges (0-0) have held the opposition in check for the Detroit pitching corps. The Tigers are hitting 40 points below their last season batting average. Only Ty Cobb (.450/2/7), Hank Greenberg (.216/3/10) and Charlie Gehringer (.324/1/5) have been any kind of offensive threat.
