Masterful Greg Maddux (2-0 2.77) crafted his second win of the season with a 9-hit job, 9 Ks and only 1 walk...a 5-run first with Chipper Jones' (.390) 2-run double and Johnny Logan's (.219) bases-loaded double got rid of loser Robin Roberts (0-2 7.00) after 2 innings.

King Carl Hubbell (3-0 2.92) won his third straight, but gave up 6 runs in 6 innings...relievers Jeff Tesreau and closer Robb Nen saved it...Alvin Dark (.278) slammed in 2 runs with a double and triple, Freddie Lindstrom (.311) drove in two with a homer and Bill Terry cracked in a couple of runs to pace the Giants 11-hit attack...Eppa Rixey (1-2 6.75) was shelled for all seven runs and took the loss...Reds' Frank Robinson cracked his 2nd fourbagger of the season.

Bob Gibson (4 IP), Satchel Paige (1 IP), Slim Sallee (2 IP) and Todd Worrell (2 IP) combined on a 2-hit shutout with Paige (1-0 3.86) being credited with the win and Worrell (0-0 2.25) the save, his first of the year. Gibson strained his back in the fourth and had to be relieved...he will be out 1-2 weeks...lefty Harry Brecheen was called up to fill in for him...Dobie Moore (.214) hit a triple in the third and scored on Chick Hafey's (.220) base hit for the only run of the game...loser Sandy Koufax (0-3 5.23) went 7 innings, allowed 6 hits and struck out 5.
PIRATES (6-6) AND LEEVER SQUEEZE BY BROWN AND CHICUBS (7-4)

Sam Leever, with a little relief help from Babe Adams, beat the Cubs on a 3-hitter...Leever (1-1 2.05) got the win, shackling the Bruins on 2 hits over 8 innings with 3 strikeouts and only one walk...Adams (0-0 0.00) got the save with a scoreless ninth inning...Roberto Clemente (.385) clubbed a 2-run sixth-inning double for the eventual game-winner...Leever (.143) plated the other Pirate score with a fifth-inning single...in the fourth the Cubbies went up 2-0 when Ernie Banks (.325) accounted for both Chicago runs with his 2nd home run this season ...Moe Brown (1-1 4.01) caught the loss...he went 8 innings, permitting 7 hits and 3 runs with 7 Ks and one walk.
