Jim Bunning (1-2 2.77) was in good form, stopping the Red Sox on 6 hits with 4 Ks and 4 BBs...only Ted Williams' (.326) 4th HR spoiled it...Ty Cobb (.447) paced the Tigers with 2-4, 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored and extended his consecutive game hitting streak to 24 games, an AL record...the AAA record is 31 held by Pie Traynor of the Pirates ...Sam Crawford (.250) and Harry Heilmann (.320) both went 2-4 with a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI...Detroit destroyed Cy Young (0-3 9.37) for all 7 runs in less than 2 innings.

In the last of the 8th, NY's Derek Jeter singled, stole second and came home with the winning run on Red Rolfe's single...Greg Olson (0-2 3.86) is the losing pitcher...Mariano Rivera (1-1 5.06) gets first save...Spud Chandler (1-0 0.00) wins in relief of Whitey Ford...Both starters Ford and Dennis Martinez are hit hard and go out in the 6th and 4th respectively...Babe Ruth (.256) clouts 3rd HR and 3 RBIs...Joe Gordon (.222) ties AAA and AL record with 2 triples.

ATHLETICS TAKES 3RD IN A ROW...TOP CLEVELAND AND SCORE

Homers by Jimmie Foxx (.442) and Rickey Henderson (.245) lead A's to victory...Foxx was 3-4 with 3 RBIs...Lefty Grove (3-0 2.45) not sharp, but gets the win with save help from Bobby Shantz (1-0 0.00)...Shantz's first save of the season...Score (2-1 2.25) left after 6 innings, trailing 4-3 and got his first loss of the year...Tribe's Manny Ramirez (.200) hit his second homer.

WHITE SOX WHACK WASHINGTON AND PASCUAL IN 9TH-INNING COMEBACK

Camilo Pascual (1-2 3.52) seemed headed for a victory with a 5-3 lead going into the last of the 9th, but 5 straight singles did him in...PH Dick Lundy's (.667) single drove in Luke Appling (.250) for the game-winner...Happy Felsch (.333) hammered a pair of homers and drove in 3 to pace the Sox...Mickey Vernon (.250) hit his second of the year for the Senators...Wilbur Wood started for the Chisox, went 6 innings and left with the score 3-2 in favor of the Senators...Mark Buehrle (1-0 4.50) got the win but gave up a run in the top of the 9th.
