Steady lefty Warren Spahn (1-0 4.64) spun a nice 6-hitter, striking out 3 and walking 2 for his first win of the season...Chris Short (0-3 5.03) took the loss, going 6 innings and giving up 3 runs, 2 earned...he left with score 3-1 in favor of Boston...Chipper Jones (.400) collected 2-4 with 2 runs scored and one batted in...Hank Aaron (.238) contributed a solo shot, too...it was the third for each of them...Philadelphia has dropped three in a row.

NY's Alvin Dark (.275) only had one hit today, but really made it count, an 8th inning grand slam off reliever Dolph Luque (0-1 40.35) to decided it...Cincy outhit the Giants 14 to 13, but NY had the homers...Bill Terry (.321) hit his 3rd of the year, a 2-run blast...he went 3-5, scored twice and batted in 3 runs...the Reds' Pete Rose (.373) was 3-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI...Tony Perez (.391) 3-4 with 2 RBIs and one run scored...and Davy Conception (.390) delivered 2-4 and scored twice...Christy Mathewson lasted only 5 innings and gave up 6 runs...Freddie Fitzsimmons (1-1 6.00) collected the win with 2 innings of work...he gave up the last Cincy run in the 9th...Gary Nolan led 6-3 after 7 innings, but couldn't finish the Giants off...he struck out 10 in 7 innings.

Larry Jackson (1-2 3.60) fired a 4-hitter to dump the Dodgers...he struck out 11 and walked 2 for his first win of the season...Johnny Mize (.179) crashed 2 home runs, one of them a 3-run smash in the 6th to put the Cards up to stay 5-3...He drove in 4 runs...Rogers Hornsby (.273) drove in 2 with a double...St. Louis slapped 5 doubles in the game...Orel Hershiser (0-2 12.08) gave up all 7 runs in 6+ innings.
