George Ruth (2-1 2.08) stopped Cleveland on 4 hits in an outstanding outing with 8 strikeouts and 4 walks...the Bosox batters battered Tribe pitching for 16 hits, but could only score 6 times...Johnny Pesky (.324) had 2 hits in 5 at bats with 2 RBIs...Oscar Charleston (.281) had 3-5 including a triple, 2 runs scored and an RBI...Dom DiMaggio (.327) and Nomar Garciaparra (.241) ripped 3 hits apiece...Mel Harder (1-1 5.79) caught the loss, yielding 4 runs in the first 4 innings.

AL LEADER A'S (10-4) SMASH LAST PLACE DETROIT (4-10)

The A's did it with the bat and on the mound...they smashed 15 hits including 2 homers by Al Simmons and one by rookie Shigeo Nagashima...and Eddie Plank (2-0 0.50) did his part limiting the Tigers to 7 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 2...Simmons (.279) was 2-5 with 5 RBIs...Nagashima (.397) was 5-5 with 3 RBIs and scored 4 times...and Mickey Cochrane (.333) went 2-4 with a double and 4 RBIs...Cochrane leads the AL and AAA with 16 RBIs on the year...Frank Lary (0-2 10.97) had another dismal start and took the loss, giving up 5 runs in 3 innings.

BRONX BOMBERS (7-8) CRUSH SENATORS (5-9) BEHIND HOYT
New York 10 Washington 3
NY's 7-run 8th inning broke open a tight 3-1 game and gave Waite Hoyt (2-1 3.32) an easy win over Washington...he scattered 9 hits, fanned 3 and walked 3...loser Firpo Marberry (1-1 3.50) went 7 innings and gave up only 5 hits and 2 earned runs...in the 8th Gehrig's (.296) 3-run blast, 2-run shot by Bill Dickey (.170) and 2-run triple by Red Rolfe (.273) sealed the Senators fate...Nats' Cory Koskie had a pinchhit 2-run homer in the 9th.

CHISOX (10-5) OUTLAST BROWNS (7-7) IN A CLOSE ONE...PALE HOSE TRAIL A'S BY HALF GAME
Chicago 5 St. Louis 4
Luis Aparicio (.275) singled in Harold Baines (.375) in the last of the 5th to make it 5-3 and the White Sox held on to beat St. Louis...Red Lyons (1-2 4.26) picked up the victory, surrendering 8 hits and 4 runs in 7 innings with 3 walks and 4 Ks...he got an assist from Bobby Thigpen (1-0 1.29), who closed it out with 2 scoreless innings for his first save this year. Hoyt Wilhelm (2-1 2.70) suffered his first loss and gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 3 innings...newcomer Louis Santop (.191) had a solo homer for Chicago...Sam West (.244) hammered one for the Browns...Baines had 2 RBIs for the Sox...Ken Williams (.286) got 2 for St. Louis.
