AMERICAN LEAGUE
WHITE SOX GO IN TO A SPIN, FALL TO FIFTH PLACE...INDIANS AND ATHLETICS MOVE INTO A TIE FOR THE AL LEAD...RED SOX AND SURPRISING SENATORS ARE SECOND ONLY 2 GAMES OUT...CHISOX DIP TO FIFTH 2.5 GAMES BEHIND...NY YANKS SIXTH, TRAIL BY 3.5 GAMES...BROWN SEVENTH 3.5 OUT...AND DETROIT IS STILL IN THE BASEMENT TRAILING BY 7 GAMES.
The Cleveland Indians (33-28) and the Philadelphia Athletics (33-28) are all knotted up and tied for first place in the American League. It looks like the Indians are finally playing up to their potential this year. They were expected to challenge last year, but never got started and finished sixth. Cleveland went 12-9 in the last 3 weeks to move up in the standings. Skipper Steve O'Neill is doing it with a fine group of starters: Herb Score (8-4 2.85), Early Wynn (6-4 2.85), Bob Feller (5-3 2.99) and Addie Joss (6-4 3.21). Luckily these guys go deep in the game, so O'Neill doesn't have to call on his ineffective relievers. He will soon be scouring the minors for some help in that department. The Indians' staff is rated best in the AL with a 3.72 ERA. Tribe batters are hitting only .258, which is sixth best. But they provide enough offense to get the job done. Tris Speaker (.312/1/23), Willie Wells (.304/5/20), Larry Doby (.303/8/31) and Luke Easter (.275/10/39) are the top hitters.
The Philadelphia Athletics (33-28) are 12-10 in the last 3 weeks and they suffered a big loss, when OF Al Simmons (.304/8/35) went out for three weeks with a hip fracture. His bat will be sorely missed. Gus Zernial was called up to replace him, but so far is hitting only .198 with one homer in nine games, but he has driven in 8 runs. Hitting is the name of the A's game with 60 home runs and a .260 team batting average. In addition to Simmons, Manager Connie Mack can call on Mickey Cochrane (.300/4/25), rookie Shigeo Nagashima (.296/5/30), John Henry Lloyd (.291/10/36) and Jimmie Foxx (.278/12/41) for run support. Frank Baker (.323/6/21) in 44 games and Danny Murphy (.295/3/9) in 36 games, have done well since being added to the starting lineup. Philadelphia has to outhit the opposition. The pitching corps has been battered around for a 4.15 ERA, last in the American League. Only starters Lefty Grove (10-2 3.53), Rube Waddell (6-4 3.13) and Eddie Plank (6-4 3.79) have ERAs under 4.00. Rollie Fingers (1-0 2.70 5 Sv), Bobby Shantz (4-3 3.72 2 Sv) and Dennis Eckersley (1-3 3.26 2 Sv) have been effective in the bullpen. Shantz and Eckersley are now starters, but have not done as well as in the relief corps. Ed Rommel is apparently going to get another chance to get into the starting rotation.
Joe McCarthy's Boston Red Sox (31-30) are tied for third place with the Washington Senators, both are two games behind the leaders. In the last 3 weeks they are 12-11. The Bosox are the #1 club in hitting with a .265 BA and 57 home runs and fifth with a 3.92 ERA. Ted Williams (.300/16/56) is having an outstanding year and is the team's leading hitter. Rookie David Ortiz (.279/13/42), Oscar Charleston (.300/7/28), Joe Cronin (.296/2/20) and Johnny Pesky (.294/0/17) have provided some offense as well. Rookie outfielder Ellis Burks (.367/5/10) has put up some very good numbers in 28 games. He is currently being platooned with Fred Lynn (.253/2/11), who has played in 37 games. McCarthy has indicated Burks will move into that slot and Lynn will be benched. Pitching-wise Roger Clemens (8-3 2.72) has stood out, leading the league in strikeouts and is third in ERA. Pedro Martinez (6-4 3.38) has done well, but George Ruth (5-6 3.90) is brilliant in one game and lackluster in the next. Relief ace, Dick Radatz (3-2 2.41), has the most saves in the AL with 8, but has blown 3 of them. Smokey Joe Wood (3-4 4.79) and Cy Young (3-6 5.03) have been disappointments. Young is in the bullpen now and it looks like Wood will be going there soon. The only problem is McCarthy doesn't have much quality as replacements. Give him another starter or two and get Nomar Garciappara (.249/3/20) going with the bat and the Red Sox could make some noise in the AL pennant chase.
Another surprising club in the AL are the Washington Senators (32-31), who suddenly find themselves tied for third place. In the last three weeks they have gone 13-9 and move up in the standings. Solid pitching and hitting is doing it for Manager Connie Mack. The Nats are second with a 3.77 ERA and lead the league with a .266 batting average. They have only 31 home runs, but timely hits get them the runs they need. Leading the Senators' hit parade are Goose Goslin (.310/4/37), Cecil Travis (.318/1/26), Rod Carew (.313/0/18) and 3B platoon duo of Gary Gaetti (.274/3/19) playing in 37 games and Corey Koskie (.282/2/16) in 33 games. Gaetti broke his wrist and will be out for 5 weeks. Minor leaguer, Eddie Yost, has been called up to fill his roster slot. Yost will platoon with Koskie. Washington has fine set of starters, headed by Dutch Leonard (7-3 2.67) and Walter Johnson (.7-2 3.59). Johnson recently developed an elbow problem and will miss a couple starts. Also in the rotation are Camilo Pascual (5-4 3.58), Firpo Marberry (4-3 3.28) and Bert Blyleven (2-1 3.18). Mack needs some longball hitters and has a few in the minors that might be brought up soon.
Al Lopez and the Chicago White Sox (33-33) were on the top of the world and the top of the American League standings just 3 weeks ago, but a 7-16 record has sent them spiralling down to fifth place, 2.5 games out of first. They still have good pitching with the best ERA in baseball, 3.48, but have taken a tumble in both pitching and hitting. The best in the starting rotation have been Wilbur Wood (7-3 2.94) and Ed Walsh (5-4 2.44). Recent adds to the rotation Gary Peters (3-3 3.21) and Billy Pierce (2-2 2.73) have done well. Ed Cicotte (5-7 3.92) and Joe Horlen (5-5 3.71) have struggled the during this losing stretch. Shoeless Joe Jackson (.365/3/34) is the top hitter in the AL and is putting together another great season. Frank Thomas (.274/14/47) is another big gun for the Sox and Lopez. The Chicago pilot has gotten good mileage out of his bench. He has platooned quite a few players. Leftfielders Minnie Minoso (.322/3/11) playing in 19 games and Harold Baines (.237/5/27) in 27 games have been quite productive, as well as the rightfield combo of Magglio Ordonez (.322/3/150) playing in 28 games and Happy Felsch (.257/5/14) in 45 games. Lopez says he is leaning toward making Minoso and Ordonez the fulltime starters to pep up the offense. Chicago's pitching is good enough to win, hitting is where they need to improve.
Casey Stengel's Bronx Bombers (31-32) are beginning to live up to their name and are hitting the ball with authority. Sixth place New York is 11-11 in the last three weeks, but are only three games off the pace. A good winning streak would put the Yanks up where they want to be in no time at all. As a team they are now hitting .257, up from a season low of .236. Babe Ruth (.300/21/48) and Lou Gehrig (.288/11/40) are leading the Bombers' attack again this year. Ruth is the top home run hitter in the Alltime Allstar Association again this year. As a team, they lead the American League with 71 circuit blasts and are second to the Boston Braves' 75 in both leagues. However, they are still missing Joe Gordon's (.322/3/18) contributions. He is still injured and will miss a few more weeks. He drove in over 100 runs last year and started off with a bang this year before being sidelined with a knee ligament problem. Like most of the Yankees, Derek Jeter (.301/7/28) and Joe DiMaggio (.274/11/33) started off slowly this season, but have picked it up in the last month. Bob Meusel (.373/2/16) has really blistered the ball since being platooned in rightfield with Earl Combs (.289/2/11). The team ERA stands at 3.90, just a little above the league average. Only Lefty Gomez (6-5 2.72) and Whitey Ford (5-5 2.96) have been effective for Stengel this year. Ron Guidry (5-5 4.71) and Waite Hoyt (2-6 5.04) have not been impressive thus far. Herb Pennock (4-4), recently placed in the starting rotation, has put up several strong starts. Bullpen specialist, Mariano Rivera (5-3 4.01 7 Sv) has been dependable. The Yanks may be on the move in the AL title chase.
Earl Weaver's St. Louis Browns (30-32) have gone into the pits in the past three weeks with a 9-13 mark and have dropped down to the seventh spot in the standings, but only trailing by 3.5 games. They have come down to earth after leading the entire AAA in home runs earlier. Top sluggers in the Browns' arsenal are Josh Gibson (.262/13/33), Eddie Murray (.251/13/34), Doug DeCinces (.22/9/29), Vern Stephens (.287/8/25) and Ken Williams (.291/6/24). But most of them have dropped off considerably of late. George Sisler (.262/5/25) has slumped severely this season after posting a robust .337 average last year. Without the homers and the hitting, the pitching staff is having a tough time, too. Hoyt Wilhelm (7-2 2.96), Jim Palmer (6-3 3.43) and Mike Mussina (5-7 3.67) continue to make good outings, but could use a little better run support. All of the other pitchers on the staff are having mediocre to bad years with ERAs mainly over 5.00 this season. It looks like the Browns could be headed back to the second division after a short stay up with the contenders. If the sluggers return, then St. Louis could perhaps reach fourth or fifth in the standings. But it looks like the bottom of the league is where they will end up.
Eighth place Detroit (27-36) has finally started playing like they are capable and they are the only thing between the Browns and last place. They are 14-9, the best record in the American League over the last three weeks. Only the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League at 13-8 had a better mark. Manager Hughie Jennings' bunch have been putting it together, both hitting and pitching, and look more like last year's third place club. The Tigers' bat brigade is topped by Ty Cobb (.354/7/38), who is having another terrific year, even better than last year. Hank Greenberg (.270/12/51), Charlie Gehringer (.275/7/31) and Harry Heilmann (.305) all are showing signs of breaking out of their season-long slumps. Since being put in at third base, Dick McAuliffe (.295/4/12) has added some punch to the lineup from the leadoff spot. Mound-wise Hal Newhouser (6-4 3.56) and Jim Bunning has been the only season-long starters. Virgil "Fire" Trucks (4-4 3.39), Schoolboy Rowe (3-1 3.75) and Jack Morris (2-1 3.23) have given them solid efforts in the last few weeks. Things are looking up for Detroit.
