Arizona State Continues Devilish Ways
Tempe, Ariz.--Arizona State continued its winning ways and retains its stronghold on the All-American Baseball League's West division.
The Sun Devils' sparkling 28-8 record is the best in the AABL. Arizona State, 7-3 in its last 10 games, holds a five-game bulge on second-place USC.
Arizona State continues to display a balance of pitching and offense. Left-hander Floyd Bannister is 5-0 with a 1.98 ERA. Bannister has struck out 50 batters in 50 innings. Right-hander Paul Moskau is 3-0 with a 1.43 ERA.
"Our pitching staff has been solid from the starters to the bullpen," manager Bobby Winkles said. "If you get strong pitching, you have a strong ballclub."
Offensively, Bob Horner (shown below with Winkles) and Oddibe McDowell have supplied power. Both sluggers have 14 home runs. Horner has 35 RBIs; McDowell has 31. Infielder Bump Wills has the West's third best average (.365).
Diamond Notes: Struggling with injuries, UCLA got some good news. Bob Hamelin and Troy Glaus have won Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks . . . San Diego State's Travis Lee became the second West player to hit three home runs in a single game. Lee, who hit his three longballs May 6 against Cal State Fullerton, joined Steve Kemp of USC as the only West player to accomplish the feat thus far . . . Lee's teammate Mark Grace is the top hitter in the West with a .379 average . . . Fred Lynn of USC has a league-best 19-game hitting streak. Lynn, who leads the West with 38 runs scored, is second to Grace with a .366 average . . . USC's Mark Prior is 7-1 with a 2.72 ERA. The right-hander has struck out a league-leading 67 batters in just 53 innings . . . Stanford's Steve Chitren has an AABL-best 12 saves.
Stat of the Week: Mark McGwire of USC leads the AABL with 25 home runs. Those homers account for 54% of McGwire's 46 hits.
