Recap: Philadelphia couldn't hold 7-0 and 9-6 leads. In the ninth inning Yogi Berra (.263/13/60) parked one out of the park off of Rollie Fingers to seal the victory in the first game. Home runs by Alejandro Oms (.354/9/28) and Frank Baker (.291/26/68) had given the A's an early lead, but starter Ed Rommel could not hold it.

Recap: Little lefty Bobby Shantz was outstanding in stopping the Yankees on 5 hits with 7 Ks and only 1 walk for his 12th win of the season. It was only his ninth start of the season. He has been used mainly in relief, appearing in 55 games. The Athletics backed him up with six home runs: two each by John Henry Lloyd (.289/23/80), Al Simmons (.308/18/81) and Jimmie Foxx (.295/38/106).

Recap: Dennis Martinez hurled 8 shutout innings, yielding only 3 hits with 8 strikeouts and no walks to lead the Browns over the Indians in the opening game of a doubleheader. Greg Olson almost blew it, but got the save. He struggled in the ninth, giving up 2 hits and walking 3, before nailing down a dubious save. Vern Stephens (.284/13/51) homered in the fourth for the first St. Louis run and George Sisler (.295/13/61) doubled in the eventual game-winner in the seventh. Loser Early Wynn hurled a strong game, allowing only 6 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks in 8 innings.

Recap: Rocky Colavito (.293/11/27) and Tris Speaker (.297/5/56) stunned Dave McNally in the 5-run seventh to lead the Cleveland Indians to a come-from-behind victory. McNally had a 6-2 lead going into the fatal inning, but couldn't hold it. Speaker doubled in two runs to make it 6-4, then Colavito crashed a 3-run homer to win the game.
