PHILADELPHIA A'S (85-65) EDGE CLOSER TO CROWN...BEAT YANKS...WHILE CLEVELAND (82-68) FALLS TO ST. LOUIS...ATHLETICS' MAGIC NUMBER IS 2 WITH 4 GAMES TO GO...A'S ARE 3 GAMES AHEAD

A'S SIMMONS RAPS DECIDING HOMER TO BEAT YANKS
NYY - 300 000 100 - 4 10 0
PHA - 120 020 01x - 6 10 0

WP: Waddell (14-13 3.19)
Save: Fingers 18 (3-6 3.07)
LP: Gomez (15-10 3.18)
HR: NYY - Gordon (13) PHA - Cochrane (8) A. Simmons (19) Baker (27)
Recap: Al Simmons (.308/19/83) pounded a two-run homer in the fifth to send Philadelphia to victory over New York. That made it 5-3 and the Athletics were never headed. Mickey Cochrane (.298/8/53) and Frank Baker (.289/27/67) also homered for the winners. Rube Waddell was the winning pitcher, pitching a solid game with 10 strikeouts in 8 innings, yielding all ten hits and four runs with no walks. Rollie Fingers finished off the Yankees in order in the ninth to get his 18th save this year. NY's Lefty Gomez gave up five runs in five innings and was hung with the loss. Any combination of Philadelphia wins and Cleveland losses that total two will give the title to the A's.

STB'S WILHELM, WILLIAMS AND GIBSON DESTROY INDIANS
STB - 070 500 010 - 13 14 2
CLE - 000 001 003 -- 4 9 2

Recap: A seven-run second inning and it was all over for Cleveland and Bob Feller. The Indian ace was ripped for seven runs in less than two innings. The Browns also went on a rampage again in the fourth as Josh Gibson (.288/37/93), Eddie Murray (.270/25/77) and Ken Williams (.269/20/73) all hit circuit clouts. All total Williams had 4 RBIs and Gibson 3 RBIs. Wilhelm hurled a strong game, holding the Tribe to one earned run with nine hits, four strikeouts and just one base on balls.
