WORLD SERIES BEGINS TODAY AT THE POLO GROUNDS


It will be the National League champs, the New York Giants against the American League titlists, the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1902 World Series. It will open today at the Polo Grounds in New York. Two twenty-game winners will get the call: Carl Hubbell (22-6 2.30) for the Giants and Lefty Grove (20-6 3.16) for the A's.

Manager John McGraw of the Giants will send Christy Mathewson (19-4 3.72) to the hill in game two against Ed Plank (15-9 3.81) of the A's. Scheduled in game three will be rookie Jeff Tesreau (10-3 3.51) for NY and Rube Waddell (14-13 3.19) for Philadelphia.

The clubs are evenly matched, at least on paper. The Giants have hit .281 as a team this season with 162 home runs and 780 runs scored, while the Athletics have put up a .270 batting average, scored 734 runs and hit 181 homers. In the pitching department New York compiled a 3.76 ERA and Philadelphia 3.85 for the year.

McGraw will use two starters in long relief, Johnny Antonelli (11-8 4.57) and Juan Marichal 913-13 3.95), along with Gaylord Perry (7-9 3.76). Robb Nen (2-9 4.14/20 saves) will be New York's short reliever and fireman.

Connie Mack will counter with a couple of starters in relief slots, Dennis Eckersley (10-9 3.73) and Ed Rommel (9-3 4.41). Bobby Shantz (12-5 3.87/9 saves), who both started and relieved this season, will also see duty in middle relief. Rollie Fingers (3-6 2.98/19 saves) will be the one to close it out for the A's.
