Southern Cal Losing Streak Opens Arizona State Lead
June 28, 2006
Los Angeles, Calif.--A six-game losing streak has dropped the Southern California Trojans back in the standings of the All-American Baseball League West.
The losing skid puts USC a season-high six games behind the front-running Arizona State. USC is 51-30. Arizona State is 57-24.
"We picked a bad time to play this way," said USC manager Rod Dedeaux. "We will use the All-Star break to get our focus back."
While USC was stumbling, Arizona State put together a string of eight victories in 10 games to stretch out its lead.
"USC has been hot on our heels for most of the first half so sure, a little breathing room is nice," said Sun Devil manager Bobby Winkles.
Meanwhile, UCLA has won nine of its last 10 games. The Bruins have taken over fourth place, moving past Texas and Stanford. After a slow start, Jackie Robinson (shown below) has raised his average to .299 with six home runs and 42 RBIs. Bob Hamelin (.291-27-76) and Troy Glaus (.276-22-60) have provided power.
