I think the first year is known to be funky if you leave the default league total settings up. There are some good deadball league totals used in 6.5 and prior versions floating around on the forum. I'm currently using one of those for 1871 and it's pretty much solved the problem. The game engine only compensates for year 2 and after.
It may also work to input actual league totals for the year in question, but I haven't tried that.
