Lundgren Edges Fernandez for East Golden Arm Award
Illinois right-hander Carl Lundgren edged Miami's Alex Fernandez for the All-American Baseball League East Golden Arm Award.
Lundgren posted a 21-7 record with an East-leading 1.81 ERA. Lundgren pitched four complete games and three shutouts for the Illini. The right-hander struck out 101 batters while walking just 60 in 253 innings.
"Winning the Golden Arm is a great honor," said Lundgren. "Hopefully I can be just as effective next season."
Lundgren won nine of his last 10 decisions. He posted a 10-2 record in road games.
Fernandez, meanwhile, led the East in victories with a 22-6 record. The Miami right-hander's ERA was 2.79. Fernandez struck out 155 batters while walking 81 in 242.1 innings.
"I pitched well this season, especially in the second half," said Fernandez. "Maybe next year I can win the Golden Arm along with winning the East pennant."
Miami, 100-62, finished second to AABL champion Ivy. The Hurricanes wound up four games behind the Eagles. Illinois, 93-69 , took third place.
Pete Broberg of Ivy placed third in the Golden Arm voting. Broberg was 20-11 with a 2.60 ERA.
