Gehrig Named East Golden Spikes Award Winner
Lou Gehrig of All-American Baseball League champion Ivy was named the East Golden Spikes Award winner.
The Eagle first baseman led numerous AABL East offensive categories en route to the Golden Spikes, which honors the Most Valuable Player. Gehrig was the East leader in home runs (21), doubles (42), stolen bases (16), slugging (.512) and OPS (.907). In addition, Gehrig was second in runs scored (110) and RBIs (115). His .304 average was sixth among East leaders.
"This is an award is the icing on the cake (after winning the College World Series)," Gehrig said. "However, my teammates are a big part of it. Sam (Mele) just as easily could have won the award."
Mele, the Eagles' All-Star right fielder, finished second in the balloting. Mele won the East batting title with a .322 average. He also led the East with 117 RBIs.
Will Clark of Mississippi State was third in the voting. Clark's .320 average was second only to Mele. Clark hit 15 homers, drove in 85 runs and recorded an OPS of 8.61 (third best in the East).
