McGwire Powers His Way to West Golden Spikes Trophy

Mark McGwire of Southern California took home the All-American Baseball League West Golden Spikes Award as the division's top player.

McGwire put up monster numbers to lead the potent Trojan offense. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound All-Star led the West in home runs (54), RBIs (145) and slugging (.626). McGwire bashed 80 extra-base hits and collected 357 total bases. The USC first baseman was second in OPS (1.031), third in runs scored (115), eighth in batting (.296) and ninth in base on balls (101).

"This will look great on my mantle, but I'd gladly trade it to play in the College World Series," said McGwire.

USC took both major West awards as Mark Prior, McGwire's teammate, won the Golden Arm.

Bob Hamelin of UCLA was second in the West Golden Spikes voting. Hamelin led the West in OPS (1.077) and runs scored (129). He was second to McGwire in homers (46) and RBIs (143).

Bob Horner of West champion Arizona State took third in the balloting.
