Michigan State: The Good, the Bat and the Ugly

The following begins a 20-part series reviewing the 2006 All-American Baseball League. Each feature will focus on one team. It will include the following sections: The Good (highlighting a team strength), The Bat (highlighting a hitting star) and the Ugly (lowlighting a team shortcoming). It will also include the team Most Valuable Player and a final hitting and pitching statistical report.

Michigan State Spartans
AABL East, 58-104, 10th place

The Good: Dan Masteller won the East Gold Glove at first base. Masteller, who also led the Spartans in runs scored, fielded .995 with a 12.01 range factor.

The Bat: Center fielder Rick Miller led the team in average (.265), RBIs (55) and OPS (.663).

The Ugly: Michigan State ranked dead last in the AABL in team average (.196), home runs (55) and runs scored (389). The Spartans were shut out a league-high 30 times!

Team MVP: Dick Radatz, Closer (shown below). The Spartans' lone All-Star selection saved 28 saves. Radatz--nicknamed "The Monster"--posted a 1.19 ERA while striking out 77 batters in just 68.1 innings.
