Minnesota: The Good, The Bat and The Ugly
The following is No. 2 of a 20-part series reviewing the 2006 All-American Baseball League. Each feature will focus on one team. It will include the following sections: The Good (highlighting a team strength), The Bat (highlighting a hitting star) and the Ugly (lowlighting a team shortcoming). It will also include the team Most Valuable Player and a final hitting and pitching statistical report.
Minnesota Golden Gophers
AABL East, 64-98, 9th place
The Good: Minnesota ran up a season-high nine game winning streak in September. The Golden Gophers swept series from second-place Miami, first-place Ivy and struggling LSU. The win string got Minnesota out of the AABL East basement.
The Bat: Infielder Brent Gates hit .314 in September to post decent final numbers for a middle infielder: team highs in both average (.287) and OPS (.745) along with eight homers and 51 RBIs.
The Ugly: Despite swatting 14 home runs and knocking in 53 runs, short stop Jerry Kindall batted just .192 and committed 30 errors for the Golden Gophers.
Team MVP: Brent Gates, Second Base (shown below). Gates (.287-8-51) scored 59 runs and drew a team-high 69 walks.
