UCLA: The Good, The Bat and The Ugly
The following is No. 18 of a 20-part series reviewing the 2006 All-American Baseball League. Each feature will focus on one team. It will include the following sections: The Good (highlighting a team strength), The Bat (highlighting a hitting star) and the Ugly (lowlighting a team shortcoming). UCLA Bruins
AABL West, 89-73, 3rd Place
The Good: The Bruins led the AABL with 816 walks. In fact, UCLA placed four batters in the top 10 for bases on balls.
The Bat: First baseman Bob Hamelin finished second in Golden Spikes voting to Mark McGwire of Southern Cal. Hamelin hit .282 with 46 homers and 143 RBIs.
The Ugly: UCLA lost seven of its first eight games and nine of its first 11 games.
Team MVP: Bob Hamelin, First Base (shown below). The All-Star pick led the West in extra base hits (89), runs scored (129), walks (165), plate appearances (704), slugging (.627) and OPS (1.077).
