Southern California: The Good, The Bat and The Ugly
The following is No. 19 of a 20-part series reviewing the 2006 All-American Baseball League. Each feature will focus on one team. It will include the following sections: The Good (highlighting a team strength), The Bat (highlighting a hitting star) and the Ugly (lowlighting a team shortcoming). It will also include the team Most Valuable Player and a final hitting and pitching statistical report.
USC Trojans
AABL West, 98-64, 2nd Place
The Good: The Trojans led the AABL in team batting (.279), home runs (202) and runs scored (911). USC produced a batting champion in Fred Lynn and the home run and RBI titlist in Mark McGwire.
The Bat: First baseman Mark McGwire was the West Golden Spikes recipient. McGwire topped the AABL with 54 homers, 145 RBIs and 357 total bases.
The Ugly: USC pitchers gave up 633 runs, 15th worst in the AABL.
Team Co-MVPs: Mark McGwire, First Base (shown below) and Mark Prior, Starting Pitchers. The All-Stars won the Golden Spikes and Golden Arm awards respectively.
