Gwynn Steps Down as San Diego State Manager; Smith Takes Over
November 11, 2006
San Diego--Tony Gwynn stepped down as player-manager of the San Diego State Aztecs citing the difficulties in wearing both hats.
"It's in the best interest for San Diego State baseball and for me," said Gwynn.
Gwynn admitted trying to play and manage took its toll on both him and the team. Gwynn hit just .248. He did, however, hit 13 home runs and drove home 63 runs.
"The days of a player-manager may be behind us forever," he said.
The Aztecs announced that Charlie Smith will be the new San Diego State manager.
"I'm excited to have this job, and I'm excited to have players like Tony," said Smith.
The new manager will face a difficult task. The Aztecs posted the worst record in the All-American Baseball League at 44-118.
Aztecs Notes: San Diego State also announced the signing of outfielder Anthony Gwynn, Tony's son, and pitcher Royce Ring to minor league contracts. Both players will attend spring training with the Aztecs.
