Stanford Signs Elway to a Minor League Deal
December 25, 2006
Palo Alto, Calif.--Christmas arrived just in time for Stanford baseball fans. The Cardinal announced it had signed football star John Elway to a minor league contract.
"We are excited to have John in the fold," said Stanford manager Mark Marquess.
Marquess hopes the move will improve the lackluster Cardinal offense. Stanford, 74-88 last season, was plagued by poor offensive support for its solid pitching staff.
"I'm happy to be here," said Elway. "Hopefully, I can move up to the big club and help out."
Elway, a strong-armed outfielder, will start the season in Class-A. Elway joins fellow football players Ernie Nevers, Joe Borchardt, Kenny Williams and Chad Hutchinson in the Stanford system.
"If we ever start a football league, we've got to be the favorite," joked Marquess.
