Minnesota Spoils Ivy's Flag-Raising Opener

April 1, 2007

Bristol, Conn.--Minnesota left fielder J.T. Bruett ruined Ivy's party in Thursday's season opener at Eagles Nest Park.

Bruett singled home George Thomas to give the Golden Gophers a 3-2 lead over the defending All-American Baseball League champions. Minnesota closer Gregg Olson then set the Eagles down in order in the bottom of ninth to record his first save of the season.

"It was a thrilling way to start the season," said Bruett who also tripled in the game. "Maybe it's a sign of things to come."

Prior to the game, Ivy raised its AABL College World Series banner. The Eagles swept Arizona State last October to win the inaugural AABL championship.

The Eagles followed up the pregame celebration by taking an early lead on a two-run single by right fielder Sam Mele in the first inning. Mele, last year's batting and RBI leader, went 2-for-4 in the opener.

Minnesota scored single runs in the second and fifth innings off Ivy starter Jim Beattie to tie the score. Thomas and Jerry Kindall each drove home a run for the Golden Gophers.

Neither Beattie nor Minnesota starter Comer figured in the decision, although both pitched well. Kerry Ligtenberg was the winning pitcher in relief of Comer. Chris Young took the loss for Ivy.

Other East Scores:
Michigan State 2, Illinois 0
Miami 4, Notre Dame 1
Michigan 4, Florida State 2
Mississippi State 2, LSU 1
